One great way to control it is to sell stuff to buy stuff. Or just in general to identify the things you never use and sell them. That also reduces clutter in the daw. By using money from sold plugins you are recovering potentially wasted money and channeling it into better choices. By getting into the used marketplace you'll also stumble on great deals, reducing the economic impact.
Right now I don't have any pressing need to buy plugins. Ive been very productive the last few months since I upgraded my computer. I did get 3 new plugs for Xmas though. I'm gonna pick of a few ones and possible get into komplete or kontakt at the next sale. I'm also gonna sell all my iZotope stuff. Other than that I'll probably buy anything new from my favorite makers such as u-he, fabfilter etc...

I might change my avatar to a photo of my neighbour's cat, that spends most of her time in our garden

I plan to make an exception with this plugin:

Would this be okay in your opinion?

One week later: Still no purchase made.
More important: no permanantly checking of Bargain section, Sell Section and Deal section.
That alone brought back time and mental space for developing new ideas, concepts etc.
So therefore up to now a definitive positive decision.

I completely failed...martinjuenke wrote:My doctor and my financial advisor are telling me that I have to control my Gear Addiction Syndrome. They propose not to buy any instrument till Black Friday.
That would mean more than ten months no investments in shiny new things... And I would have to concentrate my music production on the instruments I have (some of them using intensively the first time).
OMG! How can I escape this reasonable proposal?
But buying, playing and selling gear is fun!

Update on my G.A.S.
I just purchased Biotek 2 because it was on sale and I've wanted it for a long time since I demo'd Biotek 1.
Sometime this month I will be purchasing a number of libraries from VSL plus their player and stage emulation FX to the tune of about $2,700.
And then that's IT.
For good.
Something has happened to me this year. It took 5 years of PC recording and the initial fascination with synths (I started by downloading free stuff and loving it) but I have finally reached the point where nothing excites me anymore.
The VSL stuff was to get away from EWQL's Play engine which I hate. I've been using it for 5 years but just can't deal with it anymore. Biotek was my last synth fling.
Seriously. Synths don't excite me anymore as far as getting new ones. Not with what I currently own. No, don't worry. I won't list them yet AGAIN. But you all know what I have. It's pretty much almost everything. The few synths that have come out this year (can't even name them, that's how little I cared) I had no interest in. I haven't even purchased the latest Softube modules and haven't updated one synth that had updates this year. I just stopped caring. What I have is good enough to make all the music in the world, which I've been doing. In the first 6 months of this year I've finished 5 CDs.
I spend most of my time now in Music Cafe and rarely come here anymore. Most of the synth discussions in this sub forum hold little interest for me. If somebody asks a question that I can answer, I'll answer it because I try to help when I can. But other than that, take a look at this page and you'll see how little involved I am with it.
FX? I have everything you could possibly want. I don't use half of it.
So this is truly it for me. I am burnt out on buying stuff. The ultimate all in one synth that can do anything and be anything is never going to be made so there's nothing left for me to get...EVER.
I have finally found the cure for G.A.S.
I wish all of you the same success if that's what you want.

If you have the financial means, there is absolutely no harm in that. If not, I am not completely sure if it is really fun what you are having.martinjuenke wrote:But buying, playing and selling gear is fun!
