It is sometimes useful to see them overlaid like that but editing them that way sucks and toggling envelopes on and off all the time just to work with them is a total workflow killer for me.
Personal preference, I guess. I much prefer to have automation envelopes all in one track rather than clutter up the screen with multiple lanes.

For me, the best approach would be to overlay the envelopes in one track by default and then have an alternative view whereby they could be split for super-detailed editing if and when such is needed.

Any plugin that resizes its window (Reaktor, Vanguard) didn't work - the wrapped window stayed at the original size.
Some work just fine, though -- Kompakt, for example (when you open and close its browser). (Let me qualify that -- the Kompakt DXi resizes it UI correctly).

However, I use Chainer for resizable VSTi plugins (for *all* VSTi plugins, actually  ). I wrap Chainer with the Cakewald adapter. Then I make an instance of it in Sonar. After that, I can make an instance of any VSTi plugin -- including those that allow their UIs to be resized. It works great. Plus, I then get "built in" VST support in Sonar automatically -- in the sense that I don't have to use the Cakewalk adapter after that, anyway! :)

Well, that's what Live, Tracktion and XT do and they start up just as fast as Sonar on my machine ...
Live 4 takes 2 to 4 times longer to start up on my system than Sonar 3.1.1. Cubase SX2 can take 5 to 10 (whoa!) times longer to start up than Sonar 3.

I much prefer manual scans although it would be nice to be able to do a manual scan from within Sonar without having to restart it afterwards to reflect the changes.
Right. And this is why I smack myself in the head everytime I click on a webpage that is a .pdf. I go frickin' crazy waiting for Acrobat to scan all its plugs and finally open.

Oh yes -- Acrobat a real PITA when it comes to starting up.

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

I find stacking three or four separate automation envelopes right on top of each other in the same track anything but slick. My word would be more like exasperating. I *much* prefer the way Cubase, Logic, and Live handle this.
Dude, you can just show and hide envelopes as needed in SONAR 4. No clutter.
I'm glad the c major scale was invented before copyright law

Read my previous post. Toggling them on and off all the time slows me down and makes me grumpy. Sonar fans for some reason always assume if I dislike it must mean that I'm not really familiar with it. I started out on Sonar. I know it well. I don't like it. You do. Thankfully we both have options.

What is it about Sonar that breeds such a fanboy mentality? The slightest criticism brings you guys out of the woodwork.

I'm looking forward to all the gushing praise for the catchup features in version 4 you've all been so rabidly assuring me weren't needed in a sequencer until yesterday.

kuniklo,

It's called a joke, you do have a sense of humor don't you?

As far as the rest of your comments go, I'll just ignore them and take it that you're grumpy from all that extra clicking and stoppage of the flow of your work. :help:

Compensation for the other-host fanboys and arseholes who criticise it when they've barely spent three minutes doing anything?

See. My point exactly.

Erm. I *do* know Sonar well and still don't like it. What's your point again?

Sure, I laugh at things that are actually funny. Did I miss a joke in this thread somewhere? You're not suggesting your workflow comments were funny, right?

To a certain segment here, those that have read some of my other post on the subject, know that I dispise the overused term "workflow". I have made quite a few references to it in the past, maybe you just didn't read them.

Well, back to the extra clicking to hide my envelopes and to make me a grumpy old bastid. :P
