Despite being a 3.5Ghz CPU OC'd to beyond 4.8Ghz, it runs 2-3C cooler than the stock fan would. All fans are running at half speed or less; they're currently the only source of noise because of their age, but Im too lazy to replace, and they're still quieter than my Matrix1000.
Best argument for PC vs Mac. Similarly, my two home-built PCs, now just over 9 years old, started on Windows 10 -- and still run it. I'm not forced to run updates if I don't want to (although I do, for security reasons) and even after all this time, I don't feel any pressure to upgrade my O.S. or worry that my DAW, or any of my VSTs will stop working tomorrow, because Win 10 is still broadly supported.

I've had to make a grand total of two hardware replacements over the years: a case fan and a graphics card - $70 total. (The graphics card I bought secondhand off Ebay). I don't use either PC for modern gaming, so the concept of a hard-to-find, $1000plus video card is utterly foreign to me.

Bottom line, custom or home-built PCs are the way to go, last forever, and won't break your wallet if they need repair.

If there are any Apple users who enjoy that same level of freedom without sacrificing the ability to stay current with all of their software I'd love to hear that story.

I spent about $7k to build my pc about 13 yrs ago, while it still works, it's really not up to the task for a lot of modern SW, there are more than a few cpu hungry DAWS and vst plugins that can bring it to it's knees pretty easy. I could save some money by rebuilding it of course, but for about the same money (I would spend) I can just buy a mac studio...

btw: I also have a powerbook g3 circa 2003 that still works and has protools 7, the enitre adobe
suite, Reason 2 and a number of old games on it. My MBOX 2 works perfectly with it...

It also was the last Hybrid Mac, e.g. it can run OS 9 SW as well as OSX...
