People expect a certain quality in music nowadays unless it's intentionally lo-fi. "Poor recordings" of the past weren't up against today's expectations. Plus, records nowadays have way more room for error with so many layers and arranegements. And it's hogwash to believe that Prince didn't care about what instruments he was using when he was known to choose specific synths, off the bat he went in expecting something and processing the f out of it purposefully afterwards.

Only they don't a Steinway Model D is going to sound different than an upright, which will sound different than a spinet from the 1940s, which will sound different than a 1960s console from the Sears CatalogDCrown wrote: Thu Feb 12, 2026 5:49 pm Well, let us take a song where the piano is the main instrument. Pianos generally sound similar,

Hi,
For anyone with experience of using SH-MAX, might it be a good software synth for me please?
I enjoy making hypnagogic murderfolk dirges mostly.
Thanks.

I have played a few SH 5s and i owned an SH 7. They both sounded good, the VCF in the SH 5 was a bit nicer. The flexibility of the SH 7 was awesome for a fixed architecture synth (i miss that panel with the knobs and switches layout).
Not interested in SH Max, though.
and one more time: "Is this the right room for an argument?

Well, it is interesting to see that you haven,t noticed I completely aggreed with you, you call it presentation, I call it hyping via social media today. Some good songs just aren't on priority list of artists and someone else makes them popular. You shouldn't care what I think of sound in general or the sound of SH-MAX or about your vocals, you have to convince your followers on social media, Wagtunes.
But SH MAX has nothing to do with Parton or boring Prince and the interesting point is indeed that Cherry Audio combined 3 synth models to one, so no 100% emu of one synth was intented and that's the cool thing about Cherry Audio. I am going to find the other synths SH7 and 3aon YouTube just out of curiousity.
There is also part 2
And I know the simple melody that guy plays with synth, I swear I heard it somewhere before!
and I agree to
"I like that initial resonant sound but find it difficult to match in software"

I used to own an SH-3, the original version with the Moog lawsuit filter. I'm not a big fan of divide-down oscillators but it could get some funky CS15-ish basses when you turn the upper bars down.CrystalWizard wrote: Fri Feb 13, 2026 4:08 am Has anyone here played an SH 3A? SH-MAX related with a shot of ot:Monsieur_FyP wrote: Fri Feb 13, 2026 10:45 am Off topic:There have been entire periods in art history during which color was considered—by painters themselves—to be completely incidental to drawing!
If you liked a piano-like sound from keys category of SH MAX you would probably choose it
If I want some e-piano sound, I have many choices, I could choose a Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Yamaha CP-7 or whatever, my choice would not be important for a song, just some e-piano. If a song is good and some-epiano is good for the song, it doesn't matter what e-piano you take, take some e-piano preset from SH-Max or sound design it to create your own preset, who cares?!
You can also use some midi controllers either in realtime or after recording to affect the sound, also a kind of sound design.
The complete wrong approach to create good songs by wasting time on too many choices or sound imo. But if you enjoy sound design, SH MAX surely offers a lot of options.
Better focus on important things.

Did I suffer a stroke? Could have sworn there were more posts in this thread.
Spent some more time with this SH Max. The good thing about its gritty/lo-fi sound is you can leave it at 1x or 2x oversampling. There's a noticeable difference to 4x oversample mode but it's not like you're going to get into Lush 2 territory so why waste cpu on it? I'm a sucker for sequencers though and I like this one. Especially since you can get a decent ratcheting type sound out of it. Liking this better than the Jupiter 8 they recently released anyway.

I liked it on the 7 but there were two oscillators.

I don't know much about the SH-7 but that does seem to be the case. It seems like VCO 1 is switchable between being standard or divide-down.

SH-Max sounds very good to my ears. Granted, it's been twenty years since I played the SH-5, but the feel is there. If I go for the "Three for $99"-bundle, which two would you pick in addition to the SH-Max? I'm thinking Atomika and...?

The SH-5 is pretty good sounding though.....
I wonder what happens if I press this button...
