I wonder if we should start to ask people to not comment more than 5 or 6 times on any given track since common sense doesn't seem to be working. It seems some folks comment any time they have a neuron fire off, often repeating themselves and definitely clogging the comment space.

Anyone know how to start comments close to other comments in SC? I've seen popular songs with comments practically every millisecond so there must be a way to do it.

Just delete them.
http://help.soundcloud.com/customer/por ... a-comment- I'm assuming people will do that as I comment every 5 seconds.
Sometimes the constructive (or otherwise) criticism isn't a great look for public consumption, but I personally like people to comment along with the tune (and often) because I get to sort of experience my done-to-death tune as a new listener.
Also - when you vote with the new Google doc voting form, can we give summarial comments? I didn't see a spot. Just the number.

Heh, be thankful, others would kill to see their track full of commnetsRobert West wrote:I wonder if we should start to ask people to not comment more than 5 or 6 times on any given track since common sense doesn't seem to be working. Seriously though, I know what you're saying, but see it this way: you get feedback in (sort of) real time. You can see what specific song section wows your listeners and which doesn't, what specific phrase/sound stands out, etc. It's a good way to improve your song creating skills.
Now I'm one of those folks that never follow their own advice...but that's a different story, he he

Yes this was supposed to happen, but seems tricky with the current system. Looking at alternatives so this might appear eventually.objectman wrote:Also - when you vote with the new Google doc voting form, can we give summarial comments? I didn't see a spot. Just the number.

How to get SoundCloud players in your voting form
Hi everyone (reposting from submission thread),
I was a little irritated with the voting page - having to go back & forth between SoundCloud/MP3s and the voting form, so I came up with a pretty simple script to put SoundCloud players for each of the songs appropriately in the voting form. Unfortunately because of how the Google forms work, I don't think it can be embedded on the page itself. So I created a bookmarklet to apply it.
If you'd like to use it, it's a pretty simple set of 3 steps and here's a page explaining how to use it.
Note: you just need to add the bookmarklet once, then every time you go to the voting form, click it.
Incidentally, this helps to solve the comment issue since you have the SC player right there in the voting form.
Enjoy!

OK, got a question about the rules. This one is not completely clear to me:
Secondly, we are allowed to layer sounds from the synth, so if I build a layered sound and want to sample it for lowering cpu-loads, do I need to use seperate samples for the layers or am I allowed to use a sample of the 'complete' sound. Of course in all cases I would be able to prove that all sounds where originally made with the synth.
??
First, if I program a bass drum that is consistently produced by the synth, can I then sample it to reduce cpu-loads (same for other drum sounds)?Sampling for example a bass drum in order to get a consistent sound is not allowed either.

My take on this... you are absolutely allowed to layer sounds from the synth. It would be impossible to get many of the sounds I've had, at the very least! Eek. If you don't have something weird like free-running oscillators, and with every midi note your patch sounds the same no matter how many instances, you can sample it and put it in some legal sampler. So sample the complete sound and be done with it.crimsonwarlock wrote:OK, got a question about the rules. It's preferred to render the entire length of the bass drum part, rather than a one shot sample.z.prime wrote:My take on this... you are absolutely allowed to layer sounds from the synth. Thanks for the reply z.prime

Ah, but that puts us in 'gray area land'bjporter wrote:It's preferred to render the entire length of the bass drum part, rather than a one shot sample.

Exactly. A lot of trust is put into the contest... for example, who knows whats really in a song until a project is seen. That's a potential gray area... there are quite a few gray areas.crimsonwarlock wrote:Thanks for the reply z.prime

Having 56 months worth of contests - it's been working out well so far, so just make best call you can when you're in grey areas.
