Both are ceramic. It doesn't really matter as these aren't going to sound like traditional pickups, anyway, and you'll be disappointed with them if you're trying to get them to sound like your other pickups. That goes for the Ibanez pickup I mentioned earlier, as well.

If you're looking for "output suited for metal", the best thing is to do a PRS partial split, all other options are a compromise to the non-split sound:

ok, thanks! I might give it a try. I only have two pots though, a single tone pot and a single volume pot, and I don't think it's a good idea for me to try make changes to the body of the guitar. I can change the pots, that's about it though

You can do it with 2 pots, or even 1. PRS puts them on 2 because that gives you the ability to have 1 split and the other not. Personally, I prefer to put them on a single pot, because it’s less work to do and easier to use in practice, and all the instances where you’d have 1 split and the other not are noisy.

Anyway, to do it in your guitar, you’d simply convert the current tone pot and/or volume pot. You’ll be adding the switch portion and leaving the rest alone.

Do I need to replace them with push-pull pots though?

Post

Yes, if you want individual splitting of each pickup, you'll need to replace both.

Thanks! My experience with changing pickups has been limited to removing the old and connecting the new to the same wires as the old pickup, so sorry about the need to be spoonfed. You've been very helpful, as always :)

No problem. Push-pull pots are Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT), meaning they make 2 connections at once. Series/parallel switching requires both sides but regular splitting only requires 1, meaning the PRS way of doing it only uses half of each switch. The switch portion is completely independent from the potentiometer portion, so to adapt that wiring to your pots, you would do them exactly the same as your current wiring and just add the switch portions.

My only issue with push-pull pots is that they always wear and then jiggle. Mini toggles or push-push always seem to last longer for me.

A cool compromise is that John Petrucci 3-way switch that splits both pickups in the middle. Best is the Ibanez 2502N but it's a blade switch.

I really like the JHS Packrat concept of multiple circuits in one so I’ve now ordered their Muffuletta and Bonsai pedals too. And some of those dual jack plugs that let you effectively stick pedals right up tight together. Gonna get noisy round here!

The brassneck of the chancers on eBay.
Because the court case was being brought against Behringer they renamed their Centaur clone, added a Behringer logo and redid the graphic on the pedal.
Some divots are now trying to sell the original design “lawsuit” pedals for hundreds.

Hard to go wrong when you have that level of control, particularly the Dry level.
