yes
and then after that we'll kill all the animals that kill other animals for food

then the world will be a polly-perfect place

The simple answer to that is that we supposedly have free will and they don't. We can live completely healthily(even healthier) on plant foods. There's no point in discussing possible nature to which people won't agree anyway. Many animals cannot survive without meat, their stomachs are made for meat. Our responsability over other animals actions aren't very big either, compared to our responsability over our own and fellow human beings' actions to take the lives other somewhat similar lifeforms.

Isn't _everything_ we (humans) do totally natural? ;)

And, for that matter, not everyone believes in free will. I for one don't :)
Move to HPC, shall we?

"We humans"...? Speak for yourself, John. (*waves tail around in an obvious way*)

Why am I a musician? Easy. I'm not smart enough to be an idiot, which was the only other choice available.

Tis correct.

Here are some statistics/tests, believe them or not(Regardless, I suggest you read about it):

Heart disease is the number one killer in most affluent nations, in North America, it accounts for about 40% of all deaths.

Fast facts from the Adventist Mortality and Health Studies:

Compared with general population:
Fatal heart attacks suffered by vegan Adventist men: less than 20%
Fatal heart attacks suffered by lacto-ovo vegetarians: about 40%

Compared with nonbeef eaters
Fatal heart attacks in men who ate beef at least 3 times a week: 60-70% more.
Fatal heart attacks in women who ate beef at least 3 times a week: 30% more

Compared with those who became vegetarian after age 50:
Risk of fatal heart disease among men who became vegetarian before age 20: about 50%
Risk of fatal heart disease among men who became vegetarian before age 30: about 30%

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the developed world. In North America, one in four people will die of cancer. Both diseases are on the rise (Which (coincidentally?), colides with the fact that people eat more meat than they used to)

Fast facts from Adventist Mortality and Health Studies

Lung Cancer:
Risk for non-smoking non-vegetarians compared to non-smoking vegetarians: 50%
Risk with low fruit consumption – less than 3 servings per week: 100% (Note Fruit consumption had a strong protective effect in this non-smoking population.)

Prostate Cancer:
Risk in non-vegetarians compared to vegetarians: 54%
Risk with frequent consumption of soymilk – greater than 1 serving per day 70%
Risk with frequent consumption of legumes – greater than 3 times per week: 50%
(Note: Higher intakes of dried fruits and tomatoes and lower intakes of fish were also protective.)

Colon Cancer:
Risk in non-vegetarians compared to vegetarians: 88%
Risk in non-vegetarians who ate red meat less than once a week compared to vegetarians: 37%
Risk in non-vegetarians who ate red meat more than once a week compared to vegetarians: 86%
Risk in non-vegetarians who ate white meat less than once a week compared to vegetarians: 50%
Risk in non-vegetarians who ate white meat more than once a week compared to vegetarians: 200%

Bladder Cancer:
Risk in non-vegetarians eating meat 3 or more times per week compared with vegetarians: Double
Risk in coffee drinkers (2 or more cups per day) compared to those who do not drink coffee: Double

Pancreatic Cancer:
Risk in those eating legumes, dried fruit and vegetable protein products at least 4 times a week compared with people seldom eating these foods: 20%

Ovarian Cancer:
Non-vegetarians consuming meat 4 or more times a week compared with vegetarians: 66%
(Note: Death rates increased with egg consumption)

Breast cancer:
Lifetime risk in overweight 30-year-old (BMI over 50th percentile) compared with normal weght 30-year-old: 57%

If you don't mind, I'd like not to be called a missionary due to the religious elements of that. Activist is more precise. But really, the only thing I wrote to begin with, was that vegetarianism is one of the main reasons for me making music, some fellow attacked the position and I defended my position and so on. So you might also say, non vegetarian activists... :)

So basically you find being a musician less dangerous than eating meat?

I don't follow the reasoning, but if it works for you that's cool. :-)

Hi again Stefan. :)

One could argue that that is correct, given that one is determinalistic. If you don't think you have any influence on your actions, I suppose I wouldn't know how to counter your position at the given time. (I'd have to look for counter deterministic arguments) :)

Meffy, what do you mean? I mistyped something? Please expand a little. :)

The whole idea of "influence" gets kinda fugged up when you think everything that happens happens due to something else :)

And, even if the arguments against determinism would "win", the arguments for free will are way too weak to have any impact on my take on the subject :)
