I know, its not quite on subject, but how is one? Is there any reason to own One in addition to Twin?

Post

Twin covers it nicely for me, as I reach for that far more than One. I can check when I get home, but I imagine One is a bit lighter on the cpu with its simple graphics and modulation options, so it is a good mono lead/bass option. One is simpler and perhaps faster, and there are a gaggle of presets you may or may not have used. IIRC, didn't CM Magazine include a CM version in an issue? I don't think there is anything different under the hood though. It might be comparable to Simplon, the filter, which I love to use extensively in every track because it is so simple for sweeps and cuts.

I'll have to install One from the CM disc... it is still included.

I guess I've demoed One in the past, but I don't remember it and now the demo license is expired. Really the only reason I ask is because with the discounts from Fabfilter, One is very cheap. Simplon too... both Simplon and One are the only things I don't own from FF.

The other reason I was wondering is because since I also received the free update to Twin 2, and wouldn't mind kicking them money for something else, but just want to make sure I can use it. After reading what you wrote (ouroboros), I'm thinking maybe I should pick up Simplon.

i'd totally let you buy my upgrade, if you want to contribute to fabfilter and fanfare. :hihi:

Thanks for answering bManic, but changing to Linear-Mode doesn't solve the problem.
When i load the preset it is set to EXP wich sounds really weird. When i change it to Linear it is closer, at least at lower velocities.
But it seems like there is some kind of bigger range because at high velocities the filter cutoff that i modulate opens way more in V2 than in V1.
Fabfilter already requested a patch so they can look into it, but maybe i am really doing something wrong here? :help:

When playing Twin1 presets with Twin2 they sound different, something about the velocity curves and also the detune i think...
Detune has not changed but you are right about the velocity sensitivity. It defaults to the new SQR mode. To get Twin1 response simply switch it to LINEAR mode.

Cheers!

Man, I should have seen that one coming... :hihi:

No I don't think you are doing anything wrong. Sounds like a bug/incompability to me.

Note: You don't have to uninstall Twin 1.0. Both happily co-exist so at least you'll have full backwards compatibility if needed. That doesn't mean that FabFilter should ignore the problem though. I hope they find out what's wrong.

Will Twin 2 still have the 800 original presets as Twin 1?

Most of the presets are re-created in Twin 2, and the menu system provides a shortcut to your old Twin 1 presets also - seems to work well, but there are some differences in envelope speeds and response curves so some adjustments may be necessary.

Peace,
Andy.

As pointed out by bManic, you're not doing anything wrong. All my V1 patches that make extensive use of velocity modulation sound totally different in V2 with any of the velocity curves.
I seem to have recognized also that the unison spread function (formerly called unison detune) behaves differently, and - as mentioned by ZenPunkHippy - the envelopes also respond differently. The envelopes in V1 seem "snappier" in some of my patches.
Even the overall tone (the way the filter saturation/distortion) behaves is different on the two in some patches. IMO this is a nice thing, as somtimes I like it better how they sound in V2, somtimes I like it better how they sound in V1. Being able to use the two alongside each other gives even more variety of sound.

The only thing I'm always worried about is what happens in case a future OS update renders the old version of a plugin unusable and old projects will be broken.

I suppose that variations with the sound are inevitable with significant upgrades such as this, but I do wish they could have retained the same sound character.

Got it. Very nice little synth!

Does anybody know, what the second stereo input is for?
1/2 obviosly goes to the sidechain, but 3/4 goes....where?

From FabFilter's own forum:

Hi S,

Strangely enough, many commercial hosts such as (Pro Tools or Logic) don't expect instrument plug-ins to have side-chains; they only show a side-chain drop down menu in the plug-in header if a plug-in offers more than 1 input (like an effect plug-in with side-chain does).

So the 'extra' 3/4 inputs actually do nothing different with the audio; they have just been added to make sure that hosts display side-chain options for the plug-in...

Cheers,
