Sure, but, imagine a couple of devs working 6 years for 600.000 €. Not possible. I'm sure they either brought some money in it too, or got additional funds.2ZrgE wrote:Not every software developer gets a 100,000 bucks a year, maybe there are very idealistic guys working at BW HQ.

Being a parent, having a full time job and making music only as a hobby makes it rather hard to justify the annual upgrade cost just to get the bugfixes. As a Linux user I have very limited choice of decent alternative DAWs if Bitwig team fails to deliver on their promise and will not release any worthwhile updates for the 12 months following the 2.0 upgrade.
I have applied for beta access and if I get it and I like the new features then I will probably upgrade to 2.0 Whether I will do so the year after will depend on Bitwig devs only. I am sure hoping they will come up with some exciting features in the coming months but I am having a hard time fighting off a bitter after-taste this new licensing model has left me with .

It's more like a gift but with some restrictions. They must generate new jobs, the company must based in this region, they must have a financing etc. Sometimes there is also a clever combination of local funds, EU funds etc. to raise the money.mutools wrote:Did they get that much money as a loan or as a gift from the German government?
If understand this correctly, it's not a real subscription because you must buy Bitwig for the full price and this subscription is only for updates and bug fixes. With a real subscription (Slate, Adobe etc) you must not buy the plugin, it's more like renting a plugin

I would be genuinely surprised if they didn't release new features every year. Although it's a steep upgrade price, I'm thinking it's going to be like how Steinberg does things with Cubase.

The interesting point is, that Bitwig becomes more expensive compared to Steinberg, Ableton etc after some years. Typical update fees for Cubase are in the last years between 50 to 99€ if you buy every update. Cubase Pro 9 is available for 579€...ckam03 wrote:I would be genuinely surprised if they didn't release new features every year. Bitwig Studio costs 300€... this upgrade plan costs 160€ every year.
So you can do the math, after 3 or 4 years you have paid more for Bitwig compared to Cubase etc.

Meanwhile I paid 200 bucks for Logic X I. 2014 and it's only gotten better since then. Hell Apple bought Alchemy and made it a built-in freebie.
I've really wanted to try Bitwig as the modular aspect has me intrigued but yeah I'm pretty priced out here :/

I already said I thought the upgrade price was steep. I'm aware that it costs more. I was just pointing it out since people see the word subscription and lose their minds. This kind of pricing does make me miss Cubase though for sure.4damind wrote:The interesting point is, that Bitwig becomes more expensive compared to Steinberg, Ableton etc after some years. Haven't read through the first 10 pages yet, so apologies if I'm covering old ground or sub-topics that have come to some sort of agreed resolution.
anyway:
regarding the new pricing plan ... instinctively I don't like it, the way they pitched it isn't enough to sway me (i.e releasing new features as they complete rather than holding back for the next major upgrade). I'm ok with waiting for the next major upgrade (while the existing software focuses mostly on bugfixes and stability), and I'm OK with the normal upgrade prices etc. I get the impression that this new licensing plan is better for them, financially. Which I'm not saying is an outrageous motivation, but if that's the reality they should put it that way .... rather than try to convice me this new way is actually better for me, hehe, because it isn't as far as I'm concerned.
HOWEVER ... if this is the way it is, end of story, etc, and I have to either accept it or move on (airing my opinions online notwithstanding), well OK - taking them at their word (where they talk about new features etc) I could only really, maybe, come to terms with it if this model was tied in to FEATURES .... because the idea that I need to be paying an effective subscription fee for bugfixes & stability updates is not acceptable to me at all, in any respect. there is no amount of mental gymnastics that will talk me in to going along with this kind of model, if indeed this is the kind of model it is. Can anyone confirm ? I mean, this 12 month thing isn't ideal anyway, but lets say I go along with it, and I buy software license on June 1st 2017, and the advertised features include A,B,C,X,Y,Z,1,2,3 ... but there's bugs with A and C, while Y,Z and 2,3 are causing crashes/stability problems .... so if these issues are not entirely resolved by June1st 2018, I have to pay ..what... 160 euro, for the bug fix ?
No dice. I won't be taking part in such a model. if you're going to get me to come to terms with a 12 month model like this, it can ONLY be feature related or you will not have my custom under any circumstances. if I pay for a feature set, and it's suffering with bugs or stability issues, I don't expect to pay for the fix.
secondly, can someone on the beta test confirm if they've allowed resizing of the GUI, similar to how it's done in Ableton Live ? or is it still fixed sizes ? because bitwig 1 was way too large on a 1366 x 768 screen, whereas every other DAW or software I use is fine and/or had better size options on the lower scale of the resolutions.

And you only get one year of updates, with Ableton you get 4.

From what I've heard. Yes. They mentioned adding that and tuplets to the piano roll a few years ago. I'm assuming it's coming with version 2. Super excited
