I assume he means without having to move the dongle around.
I think this is one area where ilok is more flexible than e-licenser.

If we are talking about Cubase Pro, dongle is not an option - it's mandatory, AFAIK.

Why? I also have plug-ins that use iLOK, and many of them only supply one authorization (although there are some companies with different policies, like UVI, for example, which give us more).zvenx wrote: Sat Nov 10, 2018 9:21 pm I think this is one area where ilok is more flexible than e-licenser.
AVID (Pro Tools), only gives you one license, for example.

Why? Because they are quite a few ilok developers who give two sometimes three authorisations (softube, slate, soundtoys, uvi (3), pspaudioware, sound radix, vilabs, Air, Eventide, Kush Audio etc etc).
They are zero developers who give more than one authorisation on e-licenser.
I am not even sure if the platform allows it.
So yes I consider that advantage ilok.

ilok has been cracked many times... elicenser not since, I don´t know, the last 10 years... if you as a developer want to protect your stuff and pay for the protection anyway... which one would you choose??

I hoped people would get that a copy protection isn't meant to be uncrackable, but rather to make things hard for crackers. eLicenser is surely crackable too, it's just a matter of time and effort.

What logic is that???chk071 wrote: Sun Nov 11, 2018 10:19 am I hoped people would get that a copy protection isn't meant to be uncrackable, but rather to make things hard for crackers.
If I pay a lot for an external copy protection of course I want it as uncrackable as possible and not just to make things a bit harder... there is nothing to "get"
But this is the point: The last time they did it, it took more than 4000 hours work to make it happen... just to proove it is possible... and this was 2009... meanwhile the implementation is far deeper I would guess... no cracker group was ever be able or willing since then to spend so much effort for the public...eLicenser is surely crackable too, it's just a matter of time and effort.
So it has been stated, that this will never ever happen again (understandable)... good times for elicenser protected stuff...

As I said, the main DAW that uses it (Pro Tools) only gives you one.zvenx wrote: Sun Nov 11, 2018 4:29 am Why? And you also have more problems, and it's more expensive, to exhange licenses that are tied to an iLOK account, when compared with eLicenser licenses.
So, Pro Tools users are as limited as Cubase users. The fact that SOME (few) plug-in developers give you more than one authorization doesn't add anything to it.

Actually I believe pro tools now uses ilok cloud as an option.
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_U ... iLok-cloud
which to me is huge. means I can use it without moving a dongle.
I think ilok2 and elicenser were about the same price last time I checked, but indeed ilok 3, made of metal not plastic is more expensive.
I have never transfered an elicenser license so I can't address that.
But ilok cloud in Pro Tools then makes the comparison moot to me.
And I am Cubendo user.

Only things I'm using iLok for now are some Softube, Soundtoys and Eventide Equivocate. The soft iLok. I don't want more hub than I have, it's too much hassle. I've deauthorized and reauthorized several things out of necessity, and iLok support was rather good. I had to contact a couple of the vendors separately and they were all good. Most of the plugins have 2 authorizations. I think if you lose the dongle it's the same as losing the Steinberg dongle.
As to plugins and more than one elicense, VSL gives you three for VE Pro and Vienna Suite, as per using it on slaves. And DAW connection to the former does not require one, so you could have four machines, three of them launching it, one as the plugin for connection.
I have moved elicenser auths from dongle to dongle over and over. If you want to transfer it to another user, there is no particular problem occurring from the platform per se. (I would just ship the dongle probably and transfer the My Steinberg (Steinberg is the one vendor that would do nothing with my MS account hijacked so while transfer of an account seems like a bad idea that's the be-all and end-all for a hard elicenser activation) rather than it cost anybody money.)
ILok dongle tends to cost about 10 dollars more now. I wouldn't want to have using my DAW reliant on internet connection.

@zvenx: Yep, Avid offers iLok Cloud for Pro Tools. The only other vendor I know make use of it as well is McDSP. Unfortunately, the Cloud option didn't seem to take off as well as I expected. Really would like other vendors to hop on board as well. So that I can at least get rid of one dongle.
