Work of genius. Funny as f**k.
Agreed! It gets a bad rap, but I gotta say that I really enjoyed that movie on many different levels. OK, it didn't have as many layers as... an onion (no, a parfait!)... but it had more going on than people realized.

The Natzi propoganda thing was completely overlooked by most & mistaken for stupidity..I got a real kick out of seeing the SS outfits..

But the book was so much better..I wish they had stuck with it..

So no other Corwainer Smith fans here?

I'm really surprised..

Have to admit, never heard of.

My favorite sci-fi writer..do a search on his name, his life story is as intresting as his fiction..

Post

His fiction isn't to be found in the usual places, and the only hits I got in the first page of Google were references TO him but not ABOUT him.

Talk about obscure. :D :D

Even John Myers' Silverlock WAS available on Indigo. :D

Obscure, yes. Peerless, beyond doubt.

Even when they get it right (Blade Runner), they f**k with the source material (the ending! Driving off into the woods? WTF?)
AFAIK blade runner (movie) has 2 different endings

I don't know if it's just me, but when I read (must say I don't much like reading) a SF book, I can only picture poor old SF of the 60's. It was even the case with blade runner. That's why I think the movie is much better than the book. I think the book only comes with the story, and not the universe.

Kernighan and Ritchie?
Yup, K&R is Kernighan & Ritchie, the authors of the slim little volume all about the C programming language. A book I've been reading for many years. Though maybe not many more years.

K&R is still a distant second to Stars, and I really do recommend that anyone who can should at least read the first ten pages and if you can put it down after that, I'll be very surprised.

Sometimes movies can be better than the book. I know no one will agree, but I think the Lord of the Rings movie is better than the book (but I've only read the book three times). The movie of LOTR really showed me the land and what it looked like. Tolkien was a great list-maker, but is just a slow read (to me). Obviously you can tell I like short fast-paced books like Stars My Destination! :D

Can someone elaborate on Bladerunner 2?
Not heard anything about this at all and didn't know Dick wrote a sequal to Electric Sheep.
he didn't, it was written by someone else.

I don't much remember the story, but it changes what you saw in blade runner a lot. I mean, it explains manipulations, deckard becomes a fugitive, original versions of replicants get back, although you're never sure.. Both Rachael are there, the replicant and the original one.
If you watch blade runner after the book it won't be the same.

Hey there's even a blade runner 3, written by K.W. Jeter too. No idea what it's about.

at the same time, do androids dream of electronic sheep was written in 68, so I maintain that the universe described in it is kinda old SF. And I read the book after the movie, so I could have easily seen the movie while reading it.

The ones behind final fantasy (movie) should do a fake harrison ford based on old pictures, and make us a blade runner 2. I mean, they do dead-realistic things, they just need a scenario. Both final fantasy and that animatrix bit had pointless stories. And we all know that a today's blade runner would be half-CG already, so it'd just be replacing the actors as well.

Strangely... not the worst idea I've ever heard! :D

On a slightly off topic note, I would personally love to see the Japanese graphic novel "Gunnm" or "Gun Dream" turned into Quadrilogy. Gunnm was reprinted as "Battle Angel Alita" in the US, and the anime adaptation of the first two sagas called "Battle Angel" is available from ADV films. I would recommend checking out at the very least the anime from the local video store if not the series of graphic novels. I'm telling you the action coupled with the multi-cultural philosophy and science fiction elements that deal with the nature of self-identity is some of the best Sci-fi that I’ve ever read. It blows the Matrix and Blade right out of the water in terms of writing, and yet has some of the most inventive action sequences ever put to ink (I'm talking a girl who deals blows with a switch blade weapon the size of a spear).

But on the other hand, I wouldn't mind seeing "Down & Out In The Magic Kingdom" on screen either.

You know that James Cameron is doing Battle Angel Alita right? With his new fancy 3D camera technique that's going to take Hollywood by storm (or so he says).

Also, "The Stars My Destination" is in the midst of a major legal pile of crap so don't expect anything to happen to that brilliant work for quite some time (considering it's been stuck their for 30 years and power house producers from 20th Century Fox, Universal, and MGM have tried to excise the book for optioning).

Ender's Game is completely adaptable material and Orson Scott Card has reliquished control to Warner Brothers. The plan is to "age" the primary children characters by 6-10 years to make it more feasible. Big mistake IMO as the childrens age is what makes this book magic. Better to write the material as it was and look at other options besides a live-action adaptation.

Rama's in the dumps as David Fincher has moved on from the "unmakeable". Besides, with a quoted budget of some 150M+, it's no wonder that the studios are leary.

Foundation is being adapted and there is an attempt at making a film out of the material. But how does one "show" psycho-history?

Martin Scorsese is adapting "Hyperion" but who knows when that will see the light of day (Scorsese is infamous for the amount of time it takes him to do a film).
