That was always likely to be the case with this initial "free" version. The question is whether (and when) they'd allow everyone else, who isn't a Montage M owner, to purchase the "full" paid version.

I reckon there's little reason to do what they're doing (allowing usage without the synth being connected) if there's no eventual intention to offer a paid standalone plugin to everyone. Of course, even if that's correct, that might come much later rather than sooner..

It is not an Editor.

ESP has a full stand-alone Montage-M synth engine.
You can use it to run multiple instances of Montage-M.
Particularly nice for the AN-X engine (hardware is limited to 16-voices).

Got ESP installed and loaded my Montage-M backup file.
Backup loaded extremely fast.
Don't have a lot of time to explore (today)... but I loaded several of my custom presets.
Pretty cool to have them virtualized in the DAW.
We don't have full editing in this version... but it's an easy workaround if you have the hardware.

If you plan to run at 96k using a super small buffer size, the CPU hit is substantial.
On a 13900k based machine, it won't play clean at a 32-sample ASIO buffer size.
Bump it up to 64-samples... and audio is clean.
I'm guessing there's some room for performance optimization.

Can't wait to explore further.

ok, seeing "this", another thought would be, that it might seem a good solution to keep it tied to the HW Montage....for now.....aslong as thats not a finished "product" at all.

A free-one for Montage owners ? Thats a nice move !
Hope they will make it "purchaseable" once it´s fully there.

I for my one have only place for ONE Keyboard ! Even if i had the $$, i could not place a Montage.
And even if i had the space on top of the $$, i´d not want to place any other than just one ***naked*** 88key masterkeyboard there. Anything more vs. Keys would ruin my haptics !
....so, i keep hopin´
"Plugin has turned Drug now"....and the business knows it.

I'm still waiting for somebody to do some Montage AN-X vs AN-1X comparisons to see if it's even worth saving up for the super expensive dongle that acts as a synth

Post

I don't have an AN1x... or I'd do that comparison.

I can say that the AN-X is certainly more capable than the OG Montage or M (using AWM2).
Note priority/articulation with AWM2 is not super accurate to mimic mono analog synths.

AN-X Filters(to my ears) are a bit bland. They sound fine... but don't have a ton of character.
For the sounds I have to cover live (Moog type melodies, leads, etc), the AN-X engine is a HUGE improvement over OG Montage.

If you're expecting the ultimate in analog synth emulation, you likely be disappointed.

I'm hoping Yamaha can expand the AN-X engine... to have more specific filter emulations, etc.

It is a compelling bonus to get this with the hardware.

What do you need to get the download access code?

There's a sheet of heavy weight paper (in the bag with the manual) that has your access code.
- Update Steinberg Download Manager to latest version
- Make sure you have Yamaha Steinberg MIDI driver v2.16 installed
- Update your Montage-M firmware to 1.2 (backup your User File)
- Enter your Access Code in the Steinberg Download Manager
- After it's downloaded, unzip the ESP installer and install

In the bag with the manual for the hardware Montage keyboard - correct?
So it's only available if you have the Montage M.

Correct, it's in the bag with the Montage-M manual.
At least for now, only for those with a Montage-M keyboard.
