You know how you light a candle in church?
It'd be nice to think that a new star was born into some distant galaxy for every unheard band he ever played, and that's where he is right now. 8)

Yeah I know, soppy, but what can you do?

He used to have a one hour show on dutch radio for a while. Some of the finest moments in dutch radios history. Still have some tapes I recorded then. I think my taste in music was immensely influenced by that weekly program of his.
Man was I ever pissed off when they kicked him off. It was obvious he regretted this to, he sounded really dissappointed.

I'll treasure the memories of many, many, many great tracks, his voice, his wit.

Bye, John.

Just sat here thinking.
And I just remembered the most memorable JP show I ever heard - I taped it and I'm sure I've still got it somewhere.
It was the day war broke out in the Gulf the first time. That'd be what? Roundabout 1990ish?
Everybody was expecting it but it was still a huge shock.
His show came on and every record he played was war related. I remember 'There's A Landing Party On The Shore' and Marvin Gayes 'War' naturally.
2 hours solid of it.
And he hardly spoke all the way through.
Just let the music convey his message.
His silence spoke volumes.
That show has stuck in my memory all this time.

Just to clarify, this was a memory, not a political comment.

These comments gave me an idea; I propose everyone who loved John Peel makes a 1 minute piece of music in tribute. I think almost all of us in the UK and a lot of you from around the world were affected by the legendary John Peel.

I'm genuinely upset by the death of the one true musical hero I ever had and I know a lot of you are too.

I'm hoping we can get enough tributes to fill a CD because that would be fantastic. If you don't know who John Peel is, make a track anyway. Whether you are aware of John or not I guarantee he has affected the music you hear.
This is from my thread in the Music Cafe. Please join in.

Oh well, I was half right.

So Mary Ann Hobbs takes his seat eh? :(

Actually, thinking about it, I think that's really bad planning not to finish his tribute show with (or even play at all) his personal favourite record. :(

Oh well. There ya go. Radio One.
