Dodgy analogy, I apologise. I've actually made the very same point myself on several occasions when people have stated "homophobia is another form of racism".
Another form of unfair bias based on who someone is yes. Another form of racism no, cause there is no 'gay race'. On the other hand people should not be forced or coerced to lieing about who they are.
I stand by the rest of my post though.
sound points all.

I almost said Amen, Brother. :hihi:

It's not a black and white (no pun intended) situation regarding the phrase "black music", I also concede. I personally think that (at present), with the situation regarding racism being as it is, the phrase 'black music' still has plenty of positivity in it. The only way a marginalised culture (be it black culture, gay culture, whatever) can advance its social standing is through visibility. Hiding never did anybody any good.

Except Lord Lucan.
I guess a white English gent I dont tend to have that perspective. I tend to think of black people as being the same as myself in most respects. At least Iv never thought of black Brits as being culturally disadvantaged. Maybe that is way off the mark, i dont know!

I think there is definately a stigma attached to the stereotypical 'innercity' black youth though. And that is growing exponentially. But this is more based on personal experiences reinforced by the media. I dont think its due to some deerouted prejudice of black people generally.

But thats a whole other story... (one Im not brave enough to get into!).

Aye. My beef with people saying "homophobia is another form of racism" is that you can't disguise being black as you can being gay. Still annoyed that I slipped into an analogy I've previously condemned.

One I can't be bothered to get into on a forum at 4 in the morning :P

Christ, it's 4 in the morning!

As my closing thingamybob, I'll say that as long as racism exists in any shape or form, black kids in predominantly white locales will be culturally disadvantaged.

Bloody hell, this thread's gone quite well hasn't it! :o

G'night all :)

Actually you can. My grandmother passed as white due to the "Brown Paper Bag test" for employment in a department store. And it STILL goes on... ever wonder why most black video babes and celebs are of fair skin......or why unscrupilous sites like this sell ' Celebrity Skin Whitening Pills"

Anyway.... TO ask people to pass as 'straight' is just as abominable in my opinion. You're in essence asking people to hide part of their life that straight people don't have to hide.

Even I get asked what race i am.. if you are ambiguous you can hide things. i dont think that's fair though and it does nothing for cultural self awareness or esteem.

You could quite easily argue that EVERYONE has suffered prejudice. Its a strange thing because in the media it seems to move from group to group, whatever isnt in the pc spot light.

Since it became un-pc to pick on fat people, its moved onto people with ginger hair. Maybe someday these guys will stand up for themselves and it'll become unacceptable to rip rengs.

But this all fall into insignificance when compared with racial or religious prejudice / discrimination. I dont know many ginger hair people who have suffered much more than a bit of cheek. However, homosexuals have probably had the worst deal of all! If you want to talk discrimination, think about the shit they went though mid 1900's.

Again, TOTALLY ot. But what the hell, it gets my post count up. :hihi:

i think this is a great discussion, let it roll..

ii-V-I is a universal cadence, i think all music has a very strong internal logic which is to a large extent universal - there are things which just work.. as far as jazz harmony, through the bebop era the musicians researched and expanded on the harmonic possibilities of common cadences in all kinds of music that was popular at the time. after that, like often in music came a backslash against complexity and things got turned on their head and modal jazz emerged. this is where debussy and the french impressionists do come in, miles davis who was pinpointing the movement was certainly aware of early 20th century impressionism

anyway to cut a long story short all music is fusion i think, people have been moving around this green earth since the birth of humanity. in modern music the fusion is emphasized because culture, information and people move so rapidly from one place to another

Right but most people don't want to go back that far. Pity because for some time we truely one world. it would be fun to go back in time to see that.

according to wikipedia the name "guitar" was given after the instrument was brought to Spain by the Moors...Africans. However, the origins go back much further (5000 years) to mesopotamia/Iran.
