The overall sensibility of the track is way more jazz than metel. Reminds me a bit of some of the Beck fusion stuff, (Esp with that one bass player guy...was it Tim Bogert?),or something, which is fine, but not really approproate.

It's in the composition and the way that the instruments react to each otehr. I suspect that the jazz vocabulary is very ingrained in you and you have difficulty putting it aside when trying other genres...but we'll see.

Which is to say that metel has a different vocabulary of licks and interactions...it's not so much the sounds people use as these interactions that make it metel.

....as this month proves, distorted guitars and big drums have very little to do with the actual sound of the genre...much like the sound of a voice doesn't make speech sound English...it's the language and the conventions therof that matter.

Nah, there's mids aplenty there...it's something on the top that makes guitars present and "In your face" sounding that's missing.

Is this guitar through some sort of amp modeller? That's their characteristic weaknes...(As I mention over and over in the FX Pod discussions...)

Apart from gadgetry (Whammy pedal, etc) main signal comes through a dbx compressor, then into a Boss SE-70 multi processor. Indeed in the SE-70 there's a cabinet simulator. It also boots the bass, which I only end up having to roll off with VST EQ anyway to avoid palm-muted "wumph" sounds.

Now that you mention it (and going back through the patch parameters), there are lots of mids, which also get accentuated in VST because I tend to scoop one section of mid and make a peak right to the side of it, depending on whether it's a lead or rhythm. And sometimes I roll off the high end if it's too raspy.

Really I guess it all needs rethought, seeing as how I'm destroying everything I'm doing in the hardware afterward in software!

But for some reason it appeals to me. That's not to say it couldn't be better, of course. If I ever got more serious about it, I suppose I'd consult a gearhead like yourself and try to engineer something a bit less piecemeal.

The funny part is, is that as these things go, I'm kind of an anti-gearhead. I would never be caught dead with an amp or guitar that cost over $500.(Except the sleekcaster which was a complete ground-up custom that I got built for $900...but an old girlfriend put up the first $375, so I'm still under $500 there

All I'm about is: No modelling!

Level 1-get a tech 21 box or amp, and go direct.

Leve 2-get a small tube amp and a microphone. (I prefer a large diaphragm condenser for living room volumes, over, say, a close miked dynamic sm57 type thing.)

My entire expenditure for my current recording rig is about $200, including the amp and a rode NT-1, or about $100 for the sansamp option, or $250 for the tech21 trademark 60 option.

...that's still a lot of gear for way under the price of a pod pro,(For either the direct or miked options, not for both)....which gives you the submerged guitar/medelled/not prescent sound,

I'm also anti-EQ and anti-compression (Unless it's acoustic guitar...). I tend to tweak guitars very little unless it's for an effect...maybe a little top boost, maybe a low cut so they don't step on the bass, but really no post-production tone shaping.

Yup, don't sound like a gearhead at all, do I?

It's just guitar...overthinking it kills it.

No microphones were harmed in the production of this song! I used a lot of "metal" sound that were in the background, and probably should have just skipped the drums, which were, yes, too low. Drums just can't be low!

There is a persistent metal hammer clanking away, and then there are two different samples of factory background sounds. Lots and lots of metal!
