obviously not a COBOL programmer ..
When I was at uni doing business systems using IBM/Fujitsu mainframes and COBOL and SQL there was this running joke with the computer science students learning C (C++ was just coming into play.. I had Borlands C++ 3.1) that the umpteen lines of COBOL would compile to zilch (so much documenting and code) whilst the sleek, cool one line code would compile/explode.

Always an interesting read here to see what you so and sos have got for your indulgence.
I have recently got myself...
1.. ADDAC latches... oh yes.. switch me in..
2.. ADDAC Quad gate 2 trig.
3.. Noise Engineering Mimetic Sequent.
4.. Rebel Technology Logo.
and a totally random purchase... I was looking for a quantiser and this came up on e-bay... never heard of them.. read the manual.. thought , ok £100 and I'm in... could not believe I won the auction...
and what is it...
a Flame Tame Machine... effing crazy.. very deep... lots to learn how to play with it.. but yeah.. came in under my max bid...
I can't remember if I logged here the Befaco Percall , Extra Mullet,Quad envelopes and Erogenous Tones Levit8 from a few weeks ago.
I think I'm done for the year...
.
BUT I remember saying that in feb.. and May.. and...
we know the routine

An idiot on Set Theory:

I read some books on COBOL, but never thankfully used in anger. FORTRAN a little bit at uni because a lot of the maths libraries used in rendering code hadn’t been rewritten in C. I’m a C# coder these days because I’m now old and lazywhyterabbyt wrote: Sat Dec 05, 2020 1:10 pmDont use the C***** word, I get nasty flashbacks. Amongst others, I had to do C**** and F****** at uni. First job was a year working as a F****** programmer, porting code from summat ( PDP-11?) via an 80286 Apricot Xen to ICL and Cray mainframes.
That's when Windows (2!) was so bad, GEM was seen as the legitimate option.
After that was mostly C and the like, until I went into sysadmin, where I mostly butchered Perl.
Ive only touched the surface really, but I do quite like C#.

Honestly it’s a joke these days how much easier coding is. Not only with the available libraries, web services and tools, but just about every code question has already been asked and answered on Stack Overflow and even providers have learned to document stuff decently. Remember trying to get my head round MFC with their terrible manuals and online site, but now you get working examples up the wazoo.
Most sysadmins at my place use powershell for everything, but we’re 95% Windows so it makes sense for us.

Heh... the version of my company's software we're about to release went through some major UI updates, converting dialogs to dockable panes and a bunch of other stuff. I was amazed at how poorly documented (or misdocumented) some of that stuff still is officially, and I never could find solutions for some of the minor bugs and annoyances online, so I had to work out my own workarounds.WatchTheGuitar wrote: Sat Dec 05, 2020 1:40 pm Remember trying to get my head round MFC with their terrible manuals and online site, but now you get working examples up the wazoo.
There's a lot of stuff where a pane never receives important messages because they are consumed by a parent pane that was automatically created, which I only confirmed by reading the MFC source code, and also a lot of weird issues with how layouts are saved and loaded from the registry.
We used Qt for one project a while back and I liked it a lot once I got to know it -- I almost wish we had converted our entire main product from MFC to Qt, it wouldn't have been much more effort

I suspect it was the abundant use of asterisks,
I had to do C**** and F****** at uni.
which is perceived by some as an indication of nerdulence.
