scarlett 18/8 due tomorrow.
is here today!! :wheee:

can set it all up now and actually play :woot!:
It's always nice when new gear arrives before the weekend. Congrats!
I love my Focusrite interfaces. All things considered, it was easy to swap my old MOTU 16a and 828mk3 for the Red 8pre and Rednet A16R.

it was just over 100 quid cheaper than anywhere else on amazon.
hence the surprise key step :hihi:
A step up in a way that matters, for you? I know that for me, extra i/o would sweeten the pain.

And congrats on the Keystep. I think it's a very fun tool, so I'm hoping you will too.

so far, extra 4 analogue inputs, with the expander it will be ten more :w00t!:
used to be ok before my modular grew more and more outputs :hihi:

keystep will come in useful both softs and hards, so well worth the investment! :)

Isn't it amazing how that happens?

can't turn your back for one second!

tbh 4 of them are the in/outs for fx pedals. but they come in handy when you fancy a second layer of something or other :D

I'd like to build some kind of breakout module that presents 4hp of jacks and takes them (with pads/gain) out the back of the module to balanced I/O on my main patchbay. I resent using front-panel space for fixed routing, it detracts from the purity of an unpatched system.

The trouble is that I haven't upgraded to a fancy case yet (waiting on some other furniture decisions), and may have to make some design choices around that. Also, the balanced I/O really isn't necessary in my tiny home setup, but it seems wrong somehow not to have it. Opinions?

Realistically this is a "2021 in gear" post...

that really depends on what modules and outboard fx stuff you have?

i like having the inputs for processing my guitar through filters/modulated fx and the in/out mixer things specifically to drop non modular fx in the middle of patches, or sending cv out through fx pedals.

and im sure there are other uses i haven't needed yet.

as to hardwired, only my audio card inputs (all four on the rear) are the only things i can't unplug/replug without messing.
i like this because i may want to drop a pedal on the synth output, so can patch that in without messing behind stuff.

i could of course go 'pro' and get a proper patch bay for all that :hihi:

I highly recommend setting up a rack/patchbay if you have space. I used my hardware more frequently and easily after I did.

I'm still mixing everything in the modular, which works very well via the Cosmix mixer module, I still have like 50 inputs that can boil down to it. As for the synths, I like chaining them together for audio output, they mix very well and can sample each other. Sooner or later I will need an interface with lots of IO, but have not really decided on any yet. Probably I will go with RME sooner or later.
