thanks for the vote :)

Post

I'll be voting in a few minutes.

Firstly This was a great month I really enjoyed listening to these tunes and am finding it harder than any other month so far to put them in order. I now have a shortlist of eighteen.

Secondly I would agree that a seperate thread for reviews would be a real advantage to people like me who don't have time to trawl thru the gossip to find what is essentially the reason for me taking part (as others feel I'm sure).

I find the reviews of others' tunes as beneficial if not more so, as mine. And while I do keep an eye on the gossip for the stuff on Cage or 5/4 timing or whatever, the reviews are essential and can get lost amongst the noise.

Thirdly just to clarify the tone of my reviews, I don't think the theme was a free for all, for me it was quite specific, though of course it could be interpreted in any fasion. But to completly ignore it is a cop-out. I don't think commercialism itself is bad (most of the artistes I like have had a number one ,I'm sure. But I detest Major Labels and saw this as great material for a theme, whether it be a pastiche an anti-label tune or a genuine attempt at commercialism.

As for my own effort. I shouldn't have rushed it. Either way it would have come out sounding to some like just samples thrown together, but I wanted to get as many songs into two minutes as I could. Quantity over quality, no doubt, but I'd rather push too far than not enough. But it WAS fun.

P.S Thanks for the vote Farlukar. Really didn't expect a vote this month.

So anyway,Here's my reviews,

1-2 Many: Very well performed and produced if a little dated. Very Full and you hit hit the notes really well especially 0:09 and 1:13 . Would have been a hit with the major labels about 15 years.

Aeida Cin: I like the vocals, a tinge of Kate Bush. In fact the whole tune has the flavour of a more obscure late 80s early 90s track. A nice take on the pop tune. Well done.

Andreas Ehrardt: I love some of the soundsyou used, but the arps were way to normal. The tune takes 30 secs to build up then breaksdown at 0:50 deflating any momentum. The tune is too mellow to be considered Major Label material.

Astanine: Too cliched where's the filers, the distortion? The hooks are there but the sounds need to be updated. The drums need more force

Barnadine: Perfect Indie rock with that respectful nod to the 60's. I really like this track. Some of the echoed guitar chops/rim shots? seem to be a bit dull. The vocals are top, the understated "wooah" stands out. Shortlisted.

Beardone: I would really have liked to hear you do a really commercial pop tune just for the fun of it. This is your best tune yet,at least what I've heard. Those drums are brilliant. But I really wanted to hear Beardy and the Boyband!!!

damstraversaz: Luvly bass, the pads have a real 60's radiophonic feel to them But not major label stuff.

Diek: Vangelis style again. The sounds are well placed but I think you need a lead to disguise the simplistic chord changes, and an edge to take it out of the 80's

DJ Paulie Phonick: Now I understand this was done before but anything that brings up such intelligent conversation in the gossip thread deserves a round(of whatever). It's a pity the thread was constantly interupted by such waffle. And if nothing else at least you didn't totally ignore the theme, it was after all a remix.

DonkeyT: This is more like it. Why so many people ignored the theme this month surprises me. You didn't. I knew you'd come out with something that was both technically competant and totally irreverant. My hat is tipped.

Audiorn Dream: Ah come on This is not for a major label, nor is it a pastiche. The bass in well played, but the tune lacks identity.

Eman8ions. This has a Banco de Gaia or Willian Orbit type feeling that I like. So this goes in the major label category. Good Work

Farlukar: Dark Trancey Hard Housey whatever type stuff. Yup this sells, that big lead sound is so part of a genre that you just can't miss. I don't like this type of tune, but you achieved what you set out to do.

Freeztar: Not commercial but nonetheless I will intrepret this as a comment on commercial music so it falls within the themes range. It's a very strange tune. I like the journey it takes and the vocals are eerie. THe bass is sound but the drums sound too far back.

Glooper: This is really good.I think it's a bit busy. I like Hip hop espeacilly UK hip hop, and this is individual enough that with a bit of polish could easily fit alongside a ninjatune.

Gregjazz: Epic Rock, Decent guitar work.

Griels: Pure Streets or maybe Goldie lookin chain.Very funky. very London? The scat , scat? had me in knots. but I'm sure streets would get away with it.

Grotman: A comment on overcommercialism?

Hovmod: Brilliant! intense! Shortlisted!

Ixox: Too straighforward . I like your piano work a lot but the tune lacks anything that would make it stand out

Katanan : Kewl. Very authentic old school punkrock.

Khepira: Firstly the vocals are perfectly produced . Too be honest I don't like this tune but it is shortlisted because A) It is Commercial and B) it appears to me to be perfectly polished a la Top of the Pops. If it was the theme that inspired you then way to go!!!!

Knockman: I don't know if Tom Waits is on a Major Label, but he has paved the way for you. Excellant stuff and shortlisted.

Knoob: It doesn't have anythingto make it stand out but it is an easy going track that could easily open a BBC news show or sumthin like that.

Kovacs: I luv this track. Don't know why- its completley chaotic. Certainly not major label material but great fun.

Lady J: If your diatribe in the gossip threads wasn't so offensive I'd have considered voting for you. However you're gonna make it big regardless of my vote so I'd rather put it were it makes a difference to somebody. Your tune is boring and tasteless and if this was purely for the competition I'd say hats off but I doubt you could try your hands at anything else. I'm sure you'd produced the same shite regardless of the theme.

Liqih: Cool. A bit too eighties for my taste but it is engaging enough

Markleford: Excellant. I look forward to seeing the video!!!!!! Shortlisted

Mchlwsln : Ok now I'm gonna show what a hypocrite I am. This is not major label stuff at all at all. But it's shortlisted coz I love it so much. Tori Amos style vocals over the top ( if you happen to know Tori I suggest you give her a call)

Msnah : Shortlisted a weird take on the theme. Pop sensibilities but very raw in its arrangement. "Do it now" is a bit sharp

Niko: Chorus is well done, but for an indie punk type tune the lead vocals lack any danger to them.

Nikp2000 A bit week and disjointed I think compression is needed here. Somebody more qualified might confirm this. But you have some great (wacky) ideas in there.

Oliver Davy Again shortlisted I don't exactly like this tune but I can imagine hearing it on the radio. In fact I was trying to pinpoint a decade and decided that it would fit anwhere in the past twenty years. So well done!!!

Patrick9 I love your voice hear and the tune nods towards radioland. In fact the melody... I dunno I cant quite put my finger on it. It is very hummable. Shortlisted

Ricky Krews: There are elements here that could make a good tune, the offbeat vocals included, but the synths or drums don't do anything for me.

Peppy197: Power Peanuts!!!! The title alone could have done it. But this is not mad enough to sit comfortably with me. The piano fx work is stunning and I really dig this tune but it it doesn't work with or against the theme.

Pheeleep You know I'm a big fan and this is an excellent piece. Another slick blend of old style scoring and cutting edge electronica but even a vocal from Popstars(tm) or something to give it a bit of tongue in cheek and to adhere to the theme.

Remco: This type of thing IS REALLY BIG in Ireland right now with Damian Rice Paddy Casey, Grey et al. Great voice soulful lyrics. Very pro

Respirator: Funky I luve it. It does sound a lot like Peter Gabriels(my favourite) Big Time. Though I can get a bit of Ian Dury n there and not just the rhythm stick .

Richie Bee: 80's sure And I'd be the firsat to ctiticize another rehash but this is more Talking Heads 80's than Kagagoooo so well done.

Rockstar Not: Very sincere maybe over sincere. I appreciate your honesty and it fits well within this tune. Good Work.

Scanme: This tune is missing a hook methinks. It takes over twenty seconds for the deep bass sound to come in thus giving the tune some identity but not much. But this is not added to. The drums are fine I especially like the shaker. But the lead doesn't engage me.

Sues Hawkins. This tune sounds to me like an extended intro. It's fine but doesn't go anywhere and does not come anywhere close to the theme.

Shane Sanders. Absorbing piece I really like this in fact it's my favourite of the month but it breaks all the rules doesn't it. I mean it's not written specifically for the comp nor is it major label material. Ah well its shortlisted anyway..

Slartifartbast: Yep this could get signed maybe not by a major but maybe a smaller label. It has a 60's folk feeling to it.

Splynter: Way too short obvioulsy but well constructed. Nice strings but too limited.

Sttjelle: There was a tune called "you can dance if you wanna" or something like that from the 80's that your voice reminds me of. You have a very pleasing voice to listen to and your song is so unoffensive that I almost missed it. Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson was a master of this kind of genre-bending spiritual tune. I am going to surprise myself now by giving you my top vote.

The System Era: Very Slick. Very tight. Totally Pro. But then again it's not written specifically for the competition and this to me is important. Are you or taking part in an online community or promoting a tune.

Tristeza Orange: This conjures up images of the opening credits to a 60's movie with Goldie Hawn. Uplifting.

You" This is haunting like something Bono would do with Enya (not to Enya!!). It would easily go to number one here in Ireland. THe vocal and guitar are gentle and complement each other. Shortlisted.

VITD: This needs the female vocal to make it complete.

Vurt Ha Ha Brilliant.

Whyte Rabbitt: Each element runs into each other. There is too much flow and not enough conversation between the seperate pieces. Its likwe an essay without paragraphs.

Woj : This sounds unfinished. It is well produced and could shift copies but the lack of vocals is very apparent.

MC Wopelka: Excellent. It's great to hear Hip-Hop in other lanquages and done well.

Xander: Top work!!! this tune really brings out your vocal qualities.

Ziokiller: Funky as f**k. Just the way I like it. Probably not a major label but certainly a smaller one. DJ Kicks style.

Techbot,

Pheeleep You know I'm a big fan and this is an excellent piece.

Actually, aside from a few close friends that have known me forever( and are surely biased  ), I had no idea I had a "real" fan. Wow. This means a lot to me! Thanks so much for the ego booster 8) I know you liked one of my tracks in the past, but it's good to see that it is consistent. It gives me a lot of hope for my first album, making me think that there may actually be a few people out there that will enjoy it. Thanks again.

Thanks, Techbot. "Inspired" - no. It's not really my kind of music either, though I can appreciate the technique that goes into well-done dance music. I basically used the theme as an excuse to use some loops I knew would work together, and learn some more.

"Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats - a French Canadian band from the 80's - I was trying to put my finger on who that vocal reminded me of - you did it :D Thanks.

Oh boo hoo. And I thought this was about voting for the track with the best chance and most likely to get signed to MAJOR label based on Music.
However you're gonna make it big regardless of my vote so I'd rather put it were it makes a difference to somebody.
Whatever. It's a shame you feel your vote for me would not make a difference.
Your tune is boring and tasteless
Perfect fit for today's mainstream music marketplace, no?
and if this was purely for the competition I'd say hats off
Then say it dammit. :p
but I doubt you could try your hands at anything else.
I'm sure you'd produced the same shite regardless of the theme.
Shows what you know. At times i've done and posted tracks here that were....

Drum n Bass
Punk
Jazz
Metal
Reggae
Pop/Rock
Garage (US and UK)
Electroclash

DO I post meaningless ambient noodling?!?! no. cause i feel a song should have a beginning, an end, some development, and a hook. I suggest you go back and listen to the stuff I have posted here in the past before again sticking that big metal foot in your big robot mouth. OUCH!

Anyone left off of this list please understand that there is more to a major label deal than a great vocal or great production or lead sound you spendt hours designing.
So, in your eminent wisdom and profound knowledge of the recording industry, you decided that the people you left off your list know nothing about the industry?

Did you ever stop to think that there are very many who entered the contest who don't want any part of a 'record deal' (and have stated such numerous times) perhaps because they see someone like you as the absolute epitomy of what they would never want to become?

That perhaps so much of the industry is so full of clawing cats, whoring baboons, scrapping cockroaches and incredibly vile, useless, talentless sycophants that they'd rather die than join such ranks?

That no matter how many times you are told this is a fun contest built around the discussion of VSTi use, you see this as just another sodding ticket to *Stardom* and bombard the threads with pictures of your lame, tired act?

That maybe several of the musicians in here have already had 'recording deals' with 'major labels' and you f**king HAVEN'T??

That maybe some KVR members really are well-connected in the industry but are scared shitless of people like you?

Yep -- it galls me that you never seem to think of such things before you make such amazing statements. Yes you are talented, but I think your mentor, whomever he/she may be, is out to do you harm, or they'd be working on your 'tude -- because it really is quite annoying and unattractive, and there are lots of girls with nice tits out there... Capice?

That makes real sense to enter a competition with the theme of "Major Label" then doesn't it? You don't see me entering Free For Alls or competitions for themes I hate do you?
Did you ever stop to think that there are very many who entered the contest who don't want any part of a 'record deal'
redundant, i already answered this above. please re-read my response.

That perhaps so much of the industry is so full of clawing cats, whoring baboons, scrapping cockroaches and incredibly vile, useless, talentless sycophants that they'd rather die than join such ranks?
Funny you can say the same thing about many industries.... acting, modelling, law, capital investing....anywhere big money is to be made you will have that. welcome to the real world.
That no matter how many times you are told this is a fun contest built around the discussion of VSTi use
I find that funny since one of the leading entries this month doesn't seem to even use a VSTi of any sort.
That maybe several of the musicians in here have already had 'recording deals' with 'major labels' and you f**king HAVEN'T??
My first record was on EMI and I had two videos on MTV US so oooops, you just put your foot in it....
That maybe some KVR members really are well-connected in the industry but are scared shitless of people like you?
Why should they be? I mean no harm. I have a little bit of talent, a little bit of beauty and a lot of attitude. If that scares them then they must not be in the right business.

Yep -- it galls me that you never seem to think of such things before you make such amazing statements.
No, you just don't know me or what I've done and instead assume..
Yes you are talented, but I think your mentor, whomever he/she may be, is out to do you harm, or they'd be working on your 'tude -- because it really is quite annoying and unattractive, and there are lots of girls with nice tits out there... Capice?
Yes but mine are not silicone and most of these girls would not even know or care what a VSTi is...

My "danger" and the reason why people 'fear me' is because i am a quadruple threat.

I can sing
I can dance
I can produce
I can play 4 or 5 instruments
and i am not hard on the eys.

oh well. deal with it. :p

Advice From Your Uncle Alex... ;)
thanks unky but your advice was kinda funky. ;)

should?doesnt exist in art "babe" ;)
plus the fact that mindless(in your words hehe)ambient noodlings often have a lot more thought in them than any "ooh i love you" type pop shite which in my ears is the same words just jumbled up.i beleive it has already been said,"you cant write a song thats never been sung".
aside from this before you go sticking your size 9s in have you ever even considered the backgrund of a lot of these "mindless"(hehe) ambient noodlers?
no i dont think you have have you...

My guess would be that people 'fear you' just because you're annoying
