I suspect that most of the people disliking Mr Hegarty are, quite simply, not bent. I find it hard to fathom how anybody who isn't can get inside his music.

However, the Mercury prize is for UK artists and its suddenly turned into the Irish football squad - not pretty good judgement of the way UK music is going.

Its a fucked up award anyway: its aim is the gauge the way that UK music is going, so, YAY!! to primal scream, suede, dizzee rascall.

and before anybody says anything - i DO want to have pj harveys children, but her music is not indicative of the way uk music is growing and changing, as has previous winners, and like A&TJ

Give the token folk, jazz and sonwriter people their dues if you want - they maybe more prophetic than the judges like to think!!

I have no problem with emotional male singers either - I totally love David Tibet, Jandek, Keiji Haino, Will Oldham, Ben Chasny, Scott Walker... in Antony's case it's just that soul singer thing I can't handle - too ornamented, maybe. Too bad - he's a very good songwriter all the same.
