Also try Renoise, as the demo has practically no limitations when it comes to making music and saving your work. Think of it as an incredible sampler with a massive step sequencer, integrated effects and VST support.

i think there is some misunderstanding here, a tracker IS a sequencer. it's a software for recording, playing back and editing midi and/or audio data. obviously it lacks stuff like a matrix editor, piano roll and such (which, as said, doesn't even apply to all trackers anymore).

you've got to see and decide yourself wether editing notes via hexnumbers in a list, blocks in a row or whatnot suits you. they all have their pros and cons, it's mostly just a matter of getting used to something.

You may find SawCutter 1.0 or SawCutter 2.0 an easy place to start.
You can't use plugins with it, but that could be a good thing.
SawCutter gets you making and playing with sounds fast.

As I understand it, the main difference between trackers & sequencers is in how you put your arrangement together: 'trackers' tend to deal with patterns which you then chain together as an arrangement. 'Sequencers' tend to have a more linear model with events arranged on a timeline.
