It's not just about dynamics. Modern mastered music is so distorted that I can't listen to most of it. It sounds horrible.

Related, I think, is we now have a generation (or two) that have grown-up listening to over-compressed, hard-limited music since age 3. Also low bandwidth MP3's. It's the norm for them. I also believe there's gonna be later-life hearing loss for the aforementioned generations. High-level ear buds, dangerously loud, bass-heavy car stereos. Being an audiophile myself, I find it very sad that a whole generation has grown up without ever being exposed to an awe-inspiring listening experience i.e. Pink Floyd on a highend Bose system, as a simple, obvious example. How many have heard a great SACD? Damn, I cringe when I hear my own music as an MP3, and my stuff is fairly lo-fi. Very sad misuse of technology.

to be honest i think people are being straight snooty when they say "OOh! MP3 it hurts my ears!"

I mean most people can tell teh difference on a good stereo with a/b comparisons of CD/wav but things like convenience and widespread of music out-weigh that. If it bothers you, than dont listen to mp3.

actually the aging rockers have experienced more hearing loss than modern kids. It's the treble that screeching rock music that is more dangerous than the boomy bass (bass can be dangerous too, but not really compared to treble). Also modern kids are more aware about the danger of hearing loss than you sillies were.

That new Greenday really sounds like shite. That acoustic song, when the chorus comes it, I swear it actually goes quieter!! At least on the radio, I would never buy the CD based on the sound on the radio. I made the mistake of buying the Killers, I can barely listen to it.

If you want dynamic range listen to Classical/Jazz/Opera
music.

Can you really appreciate audiophile recording under
anything but audiophile conditions? I seldom listen to classical music in my car etc.

Also the mp3 format has probably set common man back a
few steps when it comes to 'quality'.

From the lecture that was posted here a while ago, I understand he will always use compression on vocals. He doesn't like using tham on anything else, unless the customer asks for it.

yep, definitely 'only'.

Instead of the diva-like sums of andy wallace and the bitch school of people who'll even want points off every album you sell for their "artistic" mixing input.

These are also the people who happily take the money and run when asked for LOUD mixes. Hence destroying a good proportion of most commercial music these days. The loudness war, it starts with the mix these days you know.
