Just hold on for the UAD emulation. I`m pretty confident their gonna nail this one as well... 8)

an impulse responce, convolution will fail at reproduction simply because non-linearities can not be recorded via that method. most of the unique character of a space delay is in the non-linear responce of every component used.

you can get simmilar effects though, using modular delay effects, either analog time or digital, with other effects in the feedback loop. any decent hardware delay has feedback loop patch-in points.

I just always hear about various producers using these Space Echo units... and they speak of these units like they are a holy grail or something... similiar to the way i hear people speak about Distressors or things like that.
They're a pain in the ass to record, really. They're very noisy and really sound best, to me anyhow, in front of an amp. Using them on vocals or snares or whatever is possible, and done all the time, but always takes some tinkering. Definitely a lot more work than a plugin . . .

how many guys at kvr have actually used hardware i wonder? ^_^

bobby; if i dont hear exactly the kind of thing you said about hardware from someone, i tend to assume they've never used it :)

You have Line6 echo pro hardware device, which aims at emulating space echo among others....
And also Line6 DM4 and the EchoPark pedal...

Yeah, naturally, I know what you mean. I do suspect that there's a lot of people comparing software to hardware they've never used. The thing that mainly eludes people is what a pain in the ass hardware is -- all hardware -- compared to plugins.

As far as FX goes, I keep a leslie, a space echo, and a couple of odd-ball digital rack units around (lexicon vortex being the absolute pick of the litter). And, of course, a mountain of stompboxes and the like. The digital stuff is a lot easier to use than the analog stuff, especially after tracking, but none of it compares to a nice plugin.

Really, with a very lovely leslie cab sitting in my live room, I almost always reach for the GMO-1 for a leslie sound unless I'm tracking. It doesn't sound the same, but it definitely doesn't sound worse. And it's super-clean, synchable, and I don't even have to stand up.

9 times out of 10, I don't bring anything out of the box once its in, unless I want to mangle it (snare to gtr amp or whatever). The noise, conversion, and hassle just don't justify the difference. That goes for compressors and eqs too. Maybe I'm lazy.

It'd be pathetic if I bought the UAD space echo tho, wouldn't it?

I've got a Space Echo sittin here - I always thought my old tube Echoplex kicked the snot outta that thing! Twas a thing of beauty

I owned the RE-201 for years. Sold it 3 months ago because I was moving countries but also because it'd developed a grounding problem and I didn't use it much anymore.. It has a great warm sound that glues very well with the source, fun twistable knobs and a twangy brittle spring reverb. But for use on final mixes it needs to be serviced regularly, unlike a plugin...

There's a lot of other tape echo units out there as well - the Roland ones are pricey mainly because they're so well-known, really. Look at Korg Stage Echo's, for example...or old Dynacord & Klemt stuff - I have a Dynacord Echocord S65 Super here, it's noisy as hell, hard to balance w/o getting excessive distortion, has preset tape speeds/delay times and can generally be a bitch...but I absolutely LOVE the sound. It's loaded with a bunch of old tubes. Haven't heard anything that really sounds like it.

As nice as it sounds,I'd say no.I played with a harp player for years who used one and the tape cartridges where getting really hard to find even back in the late 80's and I'm sure it would be no fun now,and they did break often enough, plus you'll have to clean and demagnatize the tape heads regularly, and realign them every so often. For VST,you'll get somewhat close using any variety of standard delay plugs coupled with the Elogoxa Elottronix XL Image which is free.Get it here http://www.uv.es/~ruizcan/p_vst.htm

the cartridges are readily available new, for about the price of 1 or 2 packets of cigarettes. :)

if anyone here has an RE-201 they've fallen out of love with I'd be happy to take it off their hands!
