The main bellowing sound is actually a processed sample of a muted trumpet. Before writing the track, I listened to a lot of Coil, took notes here and there. One track, can't remember which, had this really excellent trumpet-like sound. So I wanted to build this track around that idea, then I turned the trumpet into a sort of temple horn. I'd also wanted to use some vocals, but they kept muddying things up, so I dropped them.
jmeier wrote:this also prompted me to dig through a lot of the sighup stuff and i was really intrigued. great work; fantastic variety.

also, and sort of off topic, that is one of the best layouts for a website that i've ever seen. it was incredibly easy to get to everything.
Always great to hear that someone is checking out the rest of the stuff. The simplicity of the website is partially a byproduct of me being too lazy to fancy it up. Thanks for listening, really glad you enjoyed.

The first part sounds like tibetan monks. Cool!

I was going for a whole temple ceremony kind of vibe in the first part. Figured it would make for a good send off. Glad you liked.

I did this track for a memorial album which fell apart and was never released, so I thought today was an appropriate day to release it. I think it's one of the better things I've done and hopefully an appropriate tribute. A few folks around here have heard it already, thought I'd share with everyone.

SIGHUP - Dirge in blue and clear (for Jhonn Balance)

12MB download, 6 minutes 33 seconds, mp3 @ 256kbps.

Hope you enjoy. Post your thoughts about Jhonn Balance or Coil. Post your own tribute track if you have one. Go write a track and post it here if you'd like.

Cheers,
Steve
Nice work, Steve.
Coil were a big inspiration to me as well, and I also did a tribute track for that compilation.
Too bad things didn't work out with it.
The track I made is called "Translucent In The Stars" and is the first track in my player on
http://myspace.com/andrewduke
It is also going to be the last track on my Organic album that's coming out in June-ish on
Cohort--a split CD with Toronto's Akumu.
Wanted to see it released, so happy about this.
Take care.
Andrew

The darkness is in my headphones. This is religious scary.

My dead ex was a huge Coil fan.

Cheers.

I remember this track...

Didn't I suggest the gating effect starting around 5:00..?

Great stuff; it's too bad the compilation fell by the wayside. Seems that happens quite a bit.

thanks for the track Steve...
hmm did lustmord work with members in coil? I thought i read something about that

Hey thanks for listening folks.

Andrew, I still have your track on my portable player, a great track. I really liked everything everyone had submitted (6 tracks in all I think).

G_J, religious is the word.

Sickle, yeah, I think at the time you suggested it needed something with a higher pitch towards the end, which ended up being the gated sound. RE:compilations and collabs not make it. It happens, not surprising considering those involved tend to be so far apart. Be easier if everyone was just down the street. Didn't I stick this on the CD-R I sent you? I meant to if I didn't.

silvercord, thanks, hope you enjoy it. Jhonn Balance did vox on at least one Lustmord album "A Document of Early Acoustic & Tactical Experimentation" which I think was recorded in the early 80s.

Couldn't agree more. :)

Don't know why I missed this the first time around. I must confess that I don't know Coil (but then I don't know much) but this track is deeply moving.

Geff/John was a member of Lustmord on the first LP (Sterile Records, 1982), contributing Chapman Stick feedback and some voice.

Coil was primarily Rushton/Balance and Peter Christopherson (ex Throbbing Gristle/PTV), with a few other relatively long-term contributors (Steve Thrower, Drew McDowall, Thighpaulsandra, Simon Norris).

So then "A Document of Early Acoustic & Tactical Experimentation," is that the first album or is it a collection of more old stuff? I know it was released in the early 90s, so possibly a compilation?
