I'm not down! Please read what I wrote... I'm up. Bouncing. Happy. Wondering.
my apologies I took the word rant as you being angry and down...

Try jazz.

resp,

i think you should not move away from this, but *towards* it. embrace your disgust/boredom with music. avoid it. let it go. don't listen to it. if this makes you nervous, set a time limit: for the next week/month/wheatever i will not listen to any music. during this period, observe yourself carefully. if you're into it, share your thoughts with us. what is life like without music? do you miss it? if so, what kind of music? and what mode of reception: live, recorded, made by you, etc.?

think of this period as a cleansing ... or perhaps a calm before the next storm in your personal evolution.

the truth is life is cycles, riding the right cycles at the right time is the trick...;)

whenever I feel that way, its usually because I am in a funk, and stuck in a rut. a change of scene usually does me some good.

Good point. We're jaded pomo's and I haven't heard a new style since glitch came about.

respirator: maybe you have to cool down a bit. You could try listening to other styles than the ones you're used to, or learning to play something new, maybe an acoustic instrument?
Or maybe you could try to listen to music without analysing how it was made? Non-muso's hear music much differently.

OTOH, people change, maybe you should try another discipline altogether... if only for a change?

I love the idea that you're fed up of Mozart and Bach but you still quite enjoy listening to your own music.

I stopped following music years ago, and I hardly listen to any now. I haven't made a great deal recently either, but I'm still engaged with it somehow. I still have the desire to make stuff, and when I'm making music my references are often things that I haven't listened to for years, but I listened so intensively at the time that they're absolutely ingrained in my memory. I can be washing the dishes, or on a train or whatever, and I'm working out the harmony for a piece that I haven't heard for 5 years. And I think that's fine really. I never know where the interest will take me; in the last few days I've had the desire to play piano again. I haven't used a keyboard to compose for well over a year, and I'd decided that I probably never would again. But nope, suddenly, because of where I am in my understanding of music it makes sense to use a keyboard.
In fact, I'd go as far as to say that not listening to much music keeps my ears fresh for when I make it.

I know I can never repeat the intense experiences I had from my teens through to early twenties of discovering that enornous world of music. But it's still cool.
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.

Part of the fun of music is the hunt. Going to a record store and buying random stuff waiting for a gem has gotten too expensive. Now with the internet it has gotten very interesting. And look how cheaply people can do quality (and awful) stuff.

i don't know what you exactly expect from the exeperience of listening to music, but as far as i'm concerned, emotion and esthetical pleasure in music is endless.

There are lots of noises, lots of musics i don't really need, which i might be tired of soon or later (even my own), but i'll never get blasé from hearing Bach's Cello Suites or Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht (for instance).

You probably don't know me or my meager output. But believe me, I don't need to cool down - then I'll be producing nothing. And I don't think more instruments would do it either (though I'd love a tuba). Again I'll stress that this is not a problem - just the way things are...

If only. That I find quite impossible...
