Here in the UK, we have a chain of stores (well, franchises actually) called Ca$h Converters, which I guess is the modern day pawn shop. In my home city of Norwich, they have recently opened up a second store that deals exclusively in musical instruments, both used and new. They tend to have more guitars than keyboards and hi tech kit, and they also have a lot of DJ stuff too, but it's always worth a look. There are other stores of a very similar nature in the city, mostly tucked away in the "rougher" side of town ;)

Sadly tho' these places tend to know the items worth so that elusive £50 ARP never happens :( LOL !

The Korgs are GREAT fun, I'd say get one if even just for passing external audio thru. :hihi: I love the delay fx on these boxes!

I still think $360 for a digi 8 track is crazy money (small outlay for what you get).. I spent 5 times that for my 18 track Roland...

i wish i had a closer look at them...at first i thought they were the Fostex versions of the Adat with the extra sync features, but i think they were modular hard disc recorders (D-20 perhaps? i look up now), looked like a complete multitrack and mixdown setup, i'm sure they would make a deal on the whole thing, rack and all (didn't see a price on the rackmount unit itself, it was a rolling frame that's angled on the top and verticle on the bottom, like for an old analog multitrack or half-track mixdown deck ....yeah, i would have loved to have that setup about 10-15 years ago when i had a Mac, Mastertacks Pro, an Emax II, and a Peavey mixer...i sure could have used a digital multitrack, "i coulda been a contenda"

Even the most ignorant pawnbroker knows to google for stuff. It would be pretty hard to mistake an ARP 2600 for some useless obsolete piece of test equipment or whatever. How could you fail to discover that, not only is it highly sought after, only 3000 were ever made, but the street price is $2500!!

Anyway you probably will find one now that I said it.

What was the original price on a 2600 anyway?

I personally would probably let it pass by unless I was sure I could flip it for a profit. Last thing I want is another temperamental, space consuming, heat generating, power sucking, high maintenance piece of gear getting in the way of playing music. But then, for $200, or probably even $1000, I'd snatch it just to sell it to you for $2500, whereupon you would inform me that I'd been ripped off, nobody pays that much for these things, etc. :-)
i was just using the Arp as an example, but you got the drift, with the internet it's impossible to score the deal of the century on the "vintage" stuff, everybody knows what they're "worth"...if i found a 2600 for $200 i'd send it to CMS and have them recondition it, they put in new, modern caps and such, makes 'em stable, less noisy, and beffier...they also have multistage and ladder filter upgrades, shit like that...i'm only daydreaming, but if one COULD find a sweet deal it might be worthwhile to fix 'er up, but i'll stick with the newer breed of modular gear (like my Doepfer A100 system!)

deals do happen- a friend of mine found an ARP 2500 for some ridiculous price (i don't remember, let's just call it $200 to piss ourselves off, ok?) when he was going to MIT, and it came with a few Serge modules as well...the guy was apoligizing for the age of the unit and "cautioning" him that the unit "wasn't midi", poor guy....and i lost the chance to buy and old Gibson "louie louie" hollowbody bass with the mute, total sweet machine, and a cherry red & black burst 335, i actually had them for awhile but gave them back to the guy becase i was broke (20 years ago), while lamenting the loss after he sold them he said he would have taken $200 if i offered, i still mourn the loss to this day (stupid stupid stupid)....

I have bought a Korg S3 for 100$ (canadian currency) & later found a card for 5$ brand new at a local music shop. The sound quality & the multitudes of features (including high quality exciter, eq, phaser, flanger, reverb, etc...) make it worthwhile for 100 bucks but... be ready to buy a manual if it's not included with the S3 because it is a very complex drum machine with lots of sub_sub menus on a 2 lines lcd screen.
