I have a problem with "marriage" being a state sponsored institution to begin with.

No argument from me there. I do enjoy my larger tax refund now, but I don't see any particular reason for it. Nor should people be rewarded by the government for having children or for being straight.

As for Missouri law, well, it was ambigious and my wife's mom was suspicious that things weren't going to be official enough... and it was easier anyway to just have a courthouse wedding than it would have been to have a religious one and explain why no relatives were invited.
