eq (easier with wideband graphic eq) and a harmonic exciter such as the fishfillets THD will also help sculp the perfect crunch tone. Layering slightly distorted/crunch and different tones/eq over the same track with panning will give you a full crunchy sound also. But as anyone will agree here, you will only get an emulated tone from these amp sims (although amplitube 2 sounds a little promising) and not the response and dynmaic/transients you get from micing a real amp with an awesome mic pre, or mixing different amps and mics if you have that luxory.

If anyone here has heard of Porcupine Tree and the work of Steven Wilson, his Blackfield album electric guitar tracks were recorded entirely direct, using Guitar Rig, POD2, V-Amp sims. Theres some real heavy crunchy sounds in there.

Howdy, metalifuxx wrote:If you have a distortion, or more importantly an overdrive pedal, run those through the computer to the amp sims, which can give a raw crunchy sound. Even any cheap mic or computer mic recording one track with that and a duplicate DI track can give some hefty crunch and realism.
i did that. i bought a cheapo 'metal' distortion pedal and plugged it into my cheapo computer the other day. i really liked the sound but it took a little while to balance the distortion, as it was way too much (the distortion).
metal isnt known for 'light distortion' though.
but as a side bonus, my background noise seemed much much lower. when i'm plugged into the computer, i battle with a 10ms latency. which is utter crap.
i'd be happy to post a short mp3 of the sound though.
