Interesting. I've had my 5080 for a few years and a best friend has a Triton (and I have a Wavestation too), so I have played extensively with both, not to mention many other Roland & Korg synths over the years, and they definitely have a distinct character (same with Yamaha - I tend to think of Yamaha as dry, dead, crystal and upfront).

It partly depends on the sounds you are drawn too i guess, but is more likely difficulty in translating the sound into words - I suck at that :D

EDIT: By the way, the success of the M1 I reckon is largely down to it was the right feature set at the right time, as well as sounding great. As a complete package it offered a huge value for the money.

The success of the D50 was more down to the fact it sounded completely unlike anything else and did stuff that synths couldn't traditionally do - and that was largely down to our own Eric Persing and the rest of the sound design team, who really did an incredible job.

beej, you own a 5080...so I guess that is what suprises me.... but post 1985 roland has consistently made my favourite samplers/synths (owned s-760/1080/2080 and looking for a 5080 one day) and the reason is I think no other hardware synths I have ever heard sound as fat, warm, thick as roland and its filters..I too own the (had an M1-ex first)T2 and now theLCDE from Korg and love these.. and have hated every other korg keyboard since, cause they all sound too thin to me... I always go back to my rolands for phatness/warmth etc....
my point? taste is SOOOOOOOOOOOO subjective..... but in a million years I would never put roland and thin in the same sentence without a negative in there :-)

I guess what I mean by thin is not so much the oscillators etc, but more like the overall EQ of the output. Roland stuff seems a little scooped in the middle, with the lows and the highs emphasised a bit more. This keeps it nice and clean, but without dominating the audio spectrum.

Korg stuff seems a little fuller - more oomph in the lower mids, with often quite a lot of FX which fill out the spectrum more - hence taking up more space in your mix.

So it was probably my words which were confusing.

I agree with you, I prefer the Roland sound, I love my 5080 and no despite having some nice softsynths which can do *some* of its sounds, I do miss it when I'm out of the studio. It just sounds effortlessly good ;D

(I love the synth pads and the guitars especially - these are what sold me on it over the Triton.)

i don't think so either, S50 was a sampler ( 8 bits depth i guess ) not a synth
The S50 was never an 8 bit sampler.

12-bit companded, if I remember correctly...

Sorry, my bad

I owned an S10 ( THIS one was an 8 bits depth sampler ) that was exactly from the same generation ( 2nd half of the eighties )

Humbles excuses !

I have always appreciated the fullness of the Cathedral
Preset on the D-50 but could never find one as good in any VSTI
D-50

The M1 Pipe Organ preset sounds a lot thiner than the D-50.

Anyway, Octopus nails the D-50 Cathedral preset. 8)
