Many will go the way of the dodo once uncompressed audio becomes economical.
Either that, or there won't be enough critical ears to tell the difference.

MIDI and the floppy disk were both invented in 1981. I still use both on a regular basis. Where's that whoooshing technological development again?

Intersting topic... Yes I believe that HD's will become almost obselete in 5-10 years time cos the holy grail of computing as far as I can see (apart form mega fast CPU's) is no moving parts.
Not only do I see the day all when MP3 players have no HD's, I predict that PC's themselves will use gigabytes of flash RAM instead of delicate hard drives.
And yes I too believe that WAV's will be the standard currency for audio in the future, probably compressed in a lossless format for easy transmission across networks.

I didn't say PC's would contain exclusively Flash RAM in ten years, I was on about smaller devices such as MP3 players etc (I will not use a portable player with moving parts, I left those behind with my Walkman...)
I stand by my comment that one day PC's WILL contain no HD's. And I'd bet it'll be A LOT less than 50 years before it happens...

Everything is in transition and will, of course, become obsolete. It's rather difficult to place a measurement on the "sooner," however, it will surely be better, else it will be later.The Chase wrote:Will they quickly disappear? I think the sooner the better.

Yes of course they'll become obsolete - so will everything eventually.
Just as a side-note, i bought a creative zen 20gig sleek mp3 player the other day and we use it for gigging with, playing drumtracks with and intermission music.
What I really want which I've not been able to find is a rack-mounted mp3 player with dirty great lit up buttons and a remote control and an auto-pause function and decent audio outputs, not these stupid mini-jack things.
Whoever makes one of those would be killing sony mini-disc in one swoop.
