i'm getting a sense from all your comments that idm is, by definition, not definition-able. like the tao. i love this ... makes me want to *do* idm ... but: 1) if it's undefinable, aren't i already doing it? 2) how the c'hell am i supposed to teach people a model for creating it if there *is* no model! ;-)

Post

to me what defines idm is...
1)the rearrangeing of seperate hits of a break/breaks/loop(replacing the one hit for another but still putting it in the same position as the original)..thats what gives idm/glitch its sound......

2)rolling hits?(snares/hats)

3)lo quality gritty noises(ring mod/delay/)

4)some form of hook(be it a synchpated noise or a normal melody)

5)usually some form of background sound/ambience

IDM is just a catch all tag for electronic music that doesnt sit comfortably in any particular genre, so you cant really define it, unless you foucus on a particular type eg. drill and bass ala RDJ, this seems a "popular" style to emulate. IDM means different things to different people......

Rather than lay out a set structure - IDM tunes aren't so fixed into the DJ oriented set structures as, say, trance or drum and bass - you might do better to produce a list of 'ways to progress through the song.' Things like
* repetition
* repetition with variation in sounds (eg twiddling the cutoff knob on a repeating bassline)
* repetition with slightly varying notes or rhythm
* different layering (possibly subdivided into breakdown, drop, overlaying a new element etc)
* tempo change (via one of a number of methods eg gradual change, half speed, the triplet trick, complete breakdown of rhythm before starting in the new tempo, just changing without warning)
* new section (normally with some elements in common with the last one)
* continuing an extended (melodic, rhythmic or whatever) phrase
* loads of other stuff that I can't remember but that you can probably spot by listening to some tunes.
* doing something totally random and unexpected (always good to remember that that's an option...)
With a few more specific examples for some of them.

This is pretty open ended and could end up producing pretty much any form of electronic music, but then the same would probably have to be true for any IDM template - that's sort of the point.
