Thanks, everyone. Rev., I skipped 4 because it didn't seem to offer terribly big improvements over 3 (and because money was even tighter at the time than it is now). Plus I was still irritated that I couldn't use the Musiclab MIDI plug-ins I bought for Sonar 3 -- they worked in 3.0, but when I bought it I got 3.11, which broke my MIDI plug-ins. :-(
mr.me, Pentagon's the only "new" (to Sonar) plug-in I've played with much so far. It's the big sister of Triangle II, which is one of my favorite freebie VSTis. Good thick sound, a heap of presets, straightforward design for the most part. Being a collector of "vintage" subtractives already this is not something I particularly needed, but I won't turn up my nose at it. :-)
I'm hoping the Lexicon is improved. I found the one that came with version 3 pretty good on some sounds, downright nasty (in a bad way) on others. Time will tell. Whatever it won't do I can manage using P[whatever]Space... or render tracks, load 'em into Reason, and use its excellent RV7000.
This might be a symptom of my flaky memory, but I could swear my worst (but great-sounding) CPU hogs are burning a little less oomph in 5 than they did in 3. Certainly Arturia Brass was one of the most demanding before; most 4-horn riffs and even some 3-horn ones caused break-up. No longer.

Well done. I got it and use it a lot. I reported irritations with the piano roll, but CW replied and said they are looking at it. I believe them. The other toys are worth the money including vvocal. If you come from 3 you would also be very pleased with the sonitus suite I think only got included since 4.

I'm liking 5PE I have to admit, Pentagon is a lush, lush synth, and the rex player is a bonus.
the autotune v-vocal thing is handy, I've only used for a laugh in the extreme sense, though it can crash Sonar completely at the touch of a button if it wants to
AND the most unbelieveable bug, in the world, that they apparently know about: you can't use more than one envelope routed to an effect per track, one stops working, absolutely unbelieveable for such a top line prodcut to leave you unable to use automation adequately. I hope they fix this but v4 only made it to 4.04 before they went for the big $$$'s of a full version update, taking this serious bug with it.
Harumph.

Question for 5 users:
When I draw controller data (say, CC1) in manually. I find it really hard to draw more at the edges or re-draw over the top, as the lines now have these little 'handles' that grab your draw cursor as you move near them. Can these be turned off somehow?
It's particularly bad when using the line tool, as you'd usually start a new line at the end of an previous one. However, because the mouse cursor now changes when you move over an existing piece of data, you can't do it.
[edit - boooooooo.
seems it will need to be fixed in an update. ]

torhan: I've never used step recording, can't really tell you. Sorry. It'll be tomorrow or Sunday before I can do much in Sonar, too busy with speech stuff at the mo.
Hunter: That's serious, yeah. I definitely want to see it fixed in a minor-version update instead of a major-version upgrade.

I just clicked "submit" to buy Sonar 5 SE. I'm upgrading from Cakewalk Music Creator 2. This forum thread makes me want to go check the mailbox. I got SE for US$200 because I bought MC2 for US$40. I say this because you can go to $SHRINKWRAPSTORE, pay US$40, and save lots on SE and PE. I used MC2, and learned enough to want an upgrade, so it was more than worth it for me.

Howdy, and welcome to KVR.
Good idea, that. Been using Cakewalk since the late 80s, but I've worked deals like that on other music software. Couldn't have afforded SampleTank without the upgrade path from Sonic Synth, for instance. :-)
