hey! what about us fostex users with Dolby?

and a varispeed you can jam up to max to get a smidge better frequency response.

and added hiss after a few bounces.

those were the days...

I am glad you did it, because i wouldn't have done a very good job of it.
cheers, tom :)
You are more that welcome. Enjoy! I've got the two-track master-deck running now. The idea is that you can do a mix on the 4trk then mix-down to 2 on the stereo-deck and never leave your vst-host. It's going to work. :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:

I  SE! Now I want to build an 8-track :D

i'm not even sure exactly what dbx was,but my porta2 hissed like a cobra without it,now the master tapes hiss without it and the only thing i can do is use digi-noise removal which is a bit unpredictable.have you any knowledge of the mysteries of the 'x'?

cool. with the VU meters, reminds me of my old Cutec 4 track.

I've got all the manuals in boxes, I should look it up.... Ok I looked it up on the net
Most Tascam Portastudios and some Tascam open-reel tape machines use the dbx system, which achieves very high levels of noise reduction by combining HF pre-emphasis with 2:1 compression across the full audio spectrum; on replay, a 1:2 expansion is engaged along with de-emphasis.

Neil on the CW forum says....
You might want to try using an expander/gate plugin to try to restore the dynamic range that is compressed with DBX. A good plugin is Cakewalk FX Expander/Gate, which can do expanding and gating very well and comes with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. I know DBX uses a 2:1 ratio when compressing, so every 2dB over the threshold results in 1dB gain reduction... I don't know the threshold to set when expanding, so you'll have to experiment. Maybe 40-50dB at a guess, as DBX results in a dynamic range of around 100dB. Set your expander to do a 1:2 ratio and experiment with the attack and release times. I'm just guessing here mate. You may be better off using the DBX decoder and recording the signal from that.

Good luck!

Neil.

The Net is a wonderful thing. Maybe we can SE a VSTi unDBX plug. 8)

Thanks. It looks a lot cooler than I thought it would when I started. I've still got room to add more mangle but I might save it for "8-Track" 8)

What? We need a unDolby plug too? That's a joke right? :clown:

Those were the days alrighty, 4-tracks on 1/8" tape. 1/32" per track! Ever see a 8-track cassette? (1/64"?) What were we thinking? :hihi:

AKA at the time it was so great it's hard to put it in a few words. Multi-track recording that we could afford was pure magic. Noise and all.

ive never played with a multitrack recorder but always wanted to ... heres my chance, I'll play with it as soon as i get home.

It's not really a 4-track. There's no punch In/Out, or overdub/replace but then tape didn't allow for playback mangle. You had to flip the tape to reverse playback. It was so much (not) fun to splice cassette tape together. It's not a real good emulation without wow and flutter or magnetized heads but it's a good time.

EDIT - I'm bugging Dave a little bit for a more tapedeck like module. It might happen.

Right, gotta emulate those 1/32" tracks and mis-alighned heads too. Dirty capstans and pinch rollers so the tape slips time and garbles?
