Lead Guitar with no attack?

I find that the most effective thing I've done requires no plug-in whatsoever. I have a look at my guitar part, slice it at appropriate (or sometimes inappropriate!) spots and then set fade-ins. It's a super-easy process in Tracktion, and only barely less so in other hosts that allow you to automate via a drawable "curve" (ie. rather than just in realtime by recording mouse movements).

In K2 you can add a modulator to control sample start, but it doesn't work if DFD is enabled (disk streaming).
Independence allows sample start offset (skip)even in streaming mode, but there I use the advance legato mode as you can also adjust the cross-fade, and this is done automatically, when playing legato or holding the ghost note.

...or use a volume pedal while playing

Well, with a delay, and as often heavy reverb, things do flow into each other. And if studio recording a lot of postprocessing can be done as well.

This is a sound I use a lot with a Chapman Stick (volume swell), traditionally I would do it with a volume pedal controlling the signal before the time based effects (so the notes blend) or using the "Slow Gear" effect on a Boss SE-70.

I'm now moving to using Guitar Rig 2 which is absolutely fantastic for this... you can assign an envelope to just about anything (not just volume) everytime you play a note, for example wah or filter cutoff. Here are a couple recording experiments I did recently using only a Stick and GR2 (you could get similar sounds with an electric guitar):

are you playing it or do you want to do it while mixing....if you're playing it use hammer ons on the beats (but not ferocious ones) and back pick some of the notes on the off beats...but again lightly and use the edge of the pick (not the tip) and a subtle horizontal movement along the string while back pickng sounds cool...but it must be subtle....that is something I pride myself in doing well (but more as an exercise)..a very discrimate palm mute is also important...

if you are going to use swells...imo auto-swell is cheesy.....a volume pedal is better...but best is volume swells done with the guitar's volume and hammer-ons (that way you're starting out with a smooth attack, not amplifying an attack and then trying to manipulat the sound post attack...however if your pots are old that might cause a problem...they make a cleaning spray that will often clear up any scratchy noise.

Again if you're trying to play it, try practicing using hmmaer-ons and volume swells to play entire solos you already know well.

I can't help you if you're trying to convert a track already played...I'd just replay it....:)

I would think a volume pedal would be moot for this on a stick (I sold a stick and got to have a lot of fun with it)...the fact the strings are so slack on the stick, and the fact that the stick is a hammer-on instrument lends itself perfect for such sounds....:)

not to overstate the obvious, but also the attack gets softer the futher you pick from the bridge...;)

I choose technique over fx whenever possible...;)

That reminds me, how is your throat-reverb technique coming along?!

If I had a crappy comedy TV show of my own (hey, stranger things have happened) I'd definitely do some sketches about anal, technique/analogue recordists!

My first sketch would involve the recordist hiring a team of midgets to hold the drum mics round a kit and run away/back in time with the rhythm to create a more natural compression!

I told my wife that I would love to see someone fart the national anthem at a ballgame...of course it would have to be done in the studio and sphincter synced for the game

Lots of very useful suggestions, thanks!

I went the volume automation way for the moment, but I'll be looking into a few of the other techniques / tools that have been posted.
