aha.. ok - thanks.. i needed to know for a discussion tomorrow with a friend of a friend.. he's building a new DAW machine and i'm going to see if i can convince him that protools is not the end-all solution.. i personally didn't like m-powered when i tried it.. couldnt even arrange a basic midi sequence.. plus it installed its stupid files onto my CF card and ruined a whole day's worth of photo shooting..

Does this dual core cpu thing work for plug-ins in hosts(for example loading some heavy cpu vst's like Timewarp 2600,Minimoog v... -will there be any improvements over single cpu?
BTW Does the Live 5 support dual cpu?

seriously though, Podium makes really effective use of multiple core. you can have as many cores as you want. you can have 20 cores, if it floats ya' boat, and Podium will use them.

Well just cause of what I wrote doesn't make Pro Tools bad or anything, it's just finnicky with what computers you feed it. There have been many discussions about Pro Tools on this forum, some have gone absolutely no where, it is what it is and is very useful to many people out there. But it does support Dual Core and i'm sure an eventual update will support those Dell machines too.

Ableton Live currently doesn't support it - it's supposed to be implemented in Live 6 I believe?

I have M-Powered, am still early in learning to use it, like it a LOT for recording, cutting and mixing audio, am still struggling with some MIDI stuff in it. But, as usual, I agree with Mr. Tunes -- It's very YMMV.

....But I do believe that I've given up the restless search for the Perfect Sequencer/Host. They all will pretty much do the business these days, they all have strong and weak points, they all have flaws of one kind or another. Time for me to just get on with learning how to use the tool, finally.

Sorry, I meant Centrino, dual-core Centrino. I hate how similar those two processor names are. I dont think they make dual-core Celerons do they?

Nope, never heard of a dual-core Celeron myself. That would actually be pretty contradictory, since the Celly's are their low-end, and dual-cores are their high end.

I buy Dell Intels all the time for work, but I long ago quit keeping track of their processor families in more than a desultory way. Personally, I haven't had a non-AMD machine at home for about 5 years....

A single instance of a plugin goes on one CPU. Load 2 plugins, it'll go on both CPU's though.

sorry for bringing this post up..
About Cubase SX. I noticed that steinberg advertises only SX 3.1 as being capable of handling dual core. My question is how much is it really an improvement over let's say an equivalent single core cpu?
And how does older versions (sx2 for example) handle dual core?

dual core compatible hosts?
