The lack of a listing in the poll is no big deal frankly I was just surprised to see to recent polls with no mention of P5 in either.

DAW's and hosts are so similar these days anyway. You can just as easily complete a whole track midi and audio in P5 and do the same thing in Sonar. Nobody will be able to tell that you used Sonar while mixing, and prepared the midi files for the project in P5 or vice versa.

There is so much crossover with softstudios, DAW's and Hosts that frankly a host is a host pretty much.

Bundled FX, instruments, notation and how a host works seem to bring up these IMHO outdated categrories.

The term softstudio has been used by magazines to describe Reason(which I use)as everything you need to make music. But it cannot record audio. Misleading. You can sequence in Reason but it's not called a sequencer see what I mean? Outdated. I think music packages are so diverse as far as how they arrive at a finished song that there probably is no easy way to categorise them. But it is still fun to read about it all

What would you use a "secondary" DAW for?
If you can't do everything you need to in your main DAW, then you need a new main DAW.

I use Logic as a main DAW, and Live as a secondary thing, for its strengths and for the things that Live does really well and Logic doesnt. It's basically a completely different music making paradigm and that can be healthy as it gets you out of habits developed when working in one application.

Plus Live is a great Live toolkit and has all sorts of uses. In short, they completment each other perfectly. Live for inspiration, jamming, remixing, on-the-fly arrangements, loop and texture generating and so on, and Logic for detail work, convertional stuff, and editing and mixing the audio generated from Live.

Agreed. Softstudio is a silly term. Being pedantic, I think that Cubase/Sonar/Logic are more like complete studios in software anyway - Reason is a MIDI sequencer with a rack of instruments/effects.

I chose Reason in this poll though. Although the term DAW is a misleading one, the fact is that I use Reason rewired into my main host in almost every project I do (where software instruments are required). So clearly Reason is my secondary piece of software.

The irony though is that this is true whatever I happen to be using as my "Main host" at the time - so I might use Live + Reason, maybe Sonar + Reason, or sometimes I'll go for Audition + Reason.

Since when has anything on that list been a DAW? They're hosts. If you have to use the acronym DAW, and for f**ks sake try not to do it in public or you'll look a complete twat, save it for the hardware.
