Such a rule would be quite weird. What about people using JUCE? What about me using SynthMaker? What about people using SynthEdit? Etc Using SELF-written code can't be worse than using code written by others

well i don't think there's any fear of stuff like juce being ruled out. it's just a library, a set of classes and things to achieve a programming objective; the VST SDK is one such library, and without it there would be no contest at all!

same for VSTGUI- and indeed any math libraries that may be used to perform any kind of interesting audio stuff.

and my guess is that SM/SE things will of course be valid - some of the people on the list use such tools as their standard environment (i may be making this up) plus there's just no reason not to. at the end of the day, unless it's any good it ain't gonna win, is it?

i think the poster was more talking about things that were already part built- like if i submitted something that i'd already been working on for ages, e.g. a finished TrackPAD3

i was joking, tuz, as I'm not a vst dev, I just messed around with SM one evening long ago. but if i do get an idea for a plug, and get it figured out, i'll go for the red lantern

Hmm, I guess what I meant was: Is the 3 month time limit supposed to be part of the challenge, or just a deadline? In the first case it would seem unsporting to use something I've already started; in the latter it would be probably fair game.

Now that I think about it, 3 months is pretty long time for a challenge, so I'm guessing that's not the intent.

But I've participated in timed coding compos before so that's what I was wondering.

so you guys, as devs, think 3 months is too long for build time? what about 2 months? let's say we started june 1st or mid june something. would that be ok with you?

also, i'm thinking any musical toy should be ok to submit.

I might be interested depending on what the actual VST is... I mean, genre/function specific?

Would be very more interesting if the rules were :

1. Not genre specific, judged on innovation and uniqueness.

2. Must be free, must be given away to all via initial download link even if said entry doesn't win.

3. If person wins then their KVR profile description must read "Greatest VST Creator EVER".

Well, 3 is just for fun but.

So what are the FINAL rules here?

one more thing... i don't know if i need to say this but just to avoid any misinterpretation, the plugs/standalones submitted for this should be freeware and available for everybody to play with and vote for. well, almost everybody... i was thinking the voting should be limited to members with a minimum of maybe 50 posts and a join date no later than maybe 3 months ago or something. i don't know, those things are tweakable, but i really wouldn't want to see anybody join w/multiple accounts just to be able to vote more than one time.

shit! we posted almost at the same time. missed this... yeah, i was thinking free for all. however, we can't really limit how people vote even if we say "vote based on innovation and uniqueness".. people are just gonna vote for what they like the best. so i think we should just let people vote for what they think is the best for them.

i don't really know about #3...

btw.. we're still discussing the rules and trying to establish them.

considering it's gonna be a free for all, i see no harm in putting you down for this.
