Pretty much yes, it's a recognised psychoacoustic principle.

MP3 compression uses it (amongst other things) to discard frequencies that are masked by other frequencies, hence reducing the amount of data needed to "describe" the overall audio, without affecting the quality too much.

bumping this to give some insight on mixing and power level balancing to those who might not be aware. since the op i've gotten much nicer studio monitors and a better grasp of using them.

Intersting thread tho'.. I must have missed it first time around, I generally remember this sort of thing.. I've gone in search of older threads with fewer posts before - I seem to have a good memory for snippets of info..

Meters tell you about what's happening in the system (the mixer, the processors, the summing, etc). They don't tell you how the music sounds. ;-)
