looking at it logically - its like asking what is the best vehicle for everything? and saying you don't like having a helicopter, small jet, biplane, jcb, truck, jeep, car etc but want the lot in one contraption.

If an application has everything self-contained, then it isn't hosting anything.

Reason 3 is this type of application.

Host means the ability to load plugins. He asked for the best host, so why are people talking about the plugins?

Cubase would have to be my vote for best all around host. It is available on both platforms (Mac and PC), excellent audio editing features, built in sample editor, great virtual instrument and effect support (hey, I think they were the first with an open spec), easy to use and learn, but deep feature set, good rewire support. Although you can find others that might excell in certain areas, I think Cubase is the best all around.

It's not developed yet,but REAPER and eXT are going in that direction

Seeing REAPER's fast progress,I believe it will be the first to become a solid "all-rounder"

what about samplitude, its had some major updates and the drum machine looks pretty nice,midi is really getting there and everyone loves the end result in regards to sound quality... awsome plugins as well...

On Windows Sonar has the *most* overall.
On Apple, Logic does.
Cross platform, Cubarse does.
Others to consider: DP (Mac only) and Samplitude (Windows).

But ... I personally think that quite possible using more than one application is a good idea anyway, as others have already said
