Does this post make any sense whatsoever to anyone? :?
in a way jens, but it's a new take on an old issue...when I worked retail it was amazing how many people heard of compressors than returned them when the only knob that worked was the gain. Everybody knew what a compressor was (though it seemed it was different to everyone), but had no clue as how to use it...nor did they have the ears to hear the changes. It's fair to say that if I had the money I would of gotten from every returned "broken" compressor I sold, I could buy a really nice compressor...;)

Do you have any evidence of this or did you just make it up ?

The thing is there has been blindtest in this area and people have a really hard time telling which is which. The last one i saw the software actually "won". And it was a software emulation compared to the hardware original. And most people thought the soft sounded better!!

How do you like them apples ?

That depends on the software compressor.

This reminds me of a thread we had here where original poster claimed all compressors that changed the sound when inserted to be 'non-transparent' and 'damaging'... Now we have an opposite idea.

Anyway, take Voxengo Marquis Compressor and see for yourself that it does change sound when just inserted. :)

The UAD-1 comps like the Fairchild, 1176LN and LA2A certainly aren't what you'd consider transparent. One of the reasons the 1176LN sounds much better than the lite SE version is that it models the input and output transformer characteristics as well - plenty of people run stuff through 1176's just for colouration only, without actually compressing them.

In any case, I still think the original post is bollox :D
