do any hosts really have sidechaining?

its not just simple audio routing that any host can do, I dont know where you guys are coming up with this

When the dx and VST plugins were stereo locked, there was NO way, except by writing an app external to the plugs to do it. dB Dynamics and TC did it this way

and if you call their behavior "working" I will laugh in your general direction

NOW VST's are allowing this, but being so common Id love to see a list of plugs that supported this three years ago

The peak controller works fine. While it may not be "true" big-dick-uber-elite side-chaining, it more then gets the job done. I use it all the time.

Almost any host can handle the audio routing. What features different VSTs have or does not have is a different issue imho.

why are we at least ten years into native apps and yet so many traditional engineers screaming for sidechains if any app can do it? Id just like an example, besides proprietary plugs in logic or saw that have been doing this all along

I could be wrong but I am pretty sure it wasnt till the last vst spec that you could do more than stereo

You're wrong :)
And there ARE a bunch of sidechaining (even free) compressors lying around.

Ive seen sidekick from twisted lemon, but I dont think it was made pre this last vst spec

If you could give some examples

the RTAS plugin format (Prottols LE and up) is the only one supporting "true" sidechaining.... it is in the specification, unlike others, Logic has native support but it is not part of the VST nor AU format.

but one can argue that VST supports sidecahining if you use a 2xstereo buss and pan the sound and sidechain to different pan pairs...

A VST plugin can have any number of inputs. Not all hosts are tied to stereo signal routing.

Tracktion provides all the necessary routing options (without complex workarounds like Cubase) and also comes bundled with 'sidechain' versions of the extremely powerful Mackie dynamics processors.

This is where people always make the biggest mistake. Routing audio is not the same thing as a compressor sidechain.

The stupid audiojargon of "sidechain" always makes people think of compressors, when in reality we're only talking about audio routing. In that sense the fruity peak controller is nothing like it.

The word is misleading.

In the audio routing sense cubase is actually one of the most flexible ones. The "complex workaround" is actually a very clear representation of the real routing that happens with sidechains. I wouldn't want it any other way.

I don't know SX very well, but I believe you have to use "surround busses" or some such.. how is that clear if you are working in stereo?

Post

VST has only allowed more than stereo input for quite a short time as far as I can tell.

Show me a VST where you can send stereo audio in and then set the detector circuit to pick from a separate track than the stereo one feeding the audio inputs

Misleading jargon again, thanks to steinberg this time. The "surround pan" in actually nothing but a router, in our case selecting wether you want your audio routed to inputs 1-2 or 3-4 on the 4-input plugin/bus.
