I think having the volume gating optional (as it is now) is good. Sometimes I want to impose a volume envelope, sometimes I don't. As for the rest of the suggestions, they're all good. Want the schematic? :)

I did exactly that in my most recent track :) Had a channel's level control the frequency of a formant filter in BiFilter. Fun stuff.
Doesn't the peak controller method introduce latency?
