What about aftertouch in particular?

Well when I press the keys harder on my keyboard within energy XT with vsti's that have been programmed to make use of aftertouch it works (the sound changes) - however the same vsti with the same settings and the same keyboard does not work (the sound does not change) in Sonar.

I don't have Sonar, but reasoning on from what other hosts do: is there a midi filter in Sonar? Some hosts allow you to filter certain kinds of incoming midi data so you won't record stuff that you don't actually want to record (such as sysex). It could be that it's set up to filter aftertoch.

You've got Sonar set to filter AT on input.

That would have been my suggestion too: Options\Project (or Options\Global - I can never remember whether these settings are saved globally or per project; I think per project).

Thank you - you are very correct guys - sorted the box was not ticked

It works :band: :D

Sonar records Aftertouch, you just have to activate it in the options. By default is DOES NOT records or recieves aftertouch data.

So Sonar works perfectly with aftertouch.

Yes there are two after touch boxes - both not active by default - key after touch - but the one I needed was channel after touch - very embarrassing considering what I have been doing to get round it  - until now :D

Whilst sonar users are here can anyone tell me if you can turn off the default behaviour where velocity info is shown in the piano roll. I keep turning it off but it comes back next time you open it, and it does my head in.

Re stability, I use sonar 5.2 and have frequent crashes every session, and having recently experienced cubase sx I'd be tempted to go the other way, given the choice again. sonar does have kick ass plugins though, in comparison.

I would think the fact that you can't even install it would indicate some operating system or driver issues rather than Cakewalk issues.

Sonar 5.2 PE is really stable for me.

under tools/project options (or something like that!) there is a midi tab that lets you select what kind of midi data you can record. aftertouch is on the list. make sure its checked!

5.2 stable here too

Is the Cubase stuff less buggy? I can't even get the latest Home Studio XL to install even with the help of Cakewalk support!!!
All is well now! It was a seriously screwed up install of XP with the system files nowhere where they should be.

A new install has Home Studio working now! Thanks!
