few things people have misunderstood here

first of, my processing power is fine, its not processing power

is the "disc" meter under the cpu meter than dies when i sue freeze files

also i am aware that cubase processes at 32 bit float, but that is usuing processing power and not tones of ram.

its clear that i dnt have enuf ram to run a lot of 32 bit audio files, which is why my freezing doesnt work

oh and for you 24 bit geeks :D, im doing tests over this week so decide the differnce for myself, if in 24 bit, do u reccomend 192 khz too?

... like you keep referring to "freeze" while actually I think you want exported or bounced files. Both files containing audio of your tracks, but generated for different purposes. Instead of freeze you can do a bounce to 16bits files and mute/disable the original track. That keeps the files at half the size.

Then why freeze in the first place?? If you have enough CPU power you don't need to freeze at all. It slows down your workflow and you've discovered the hard way there are limitations to it.

Well, partially... The audio files will have to get loaded into RAM (temporary, and probably not as a whole; everything goes through your RAM one way or another) so bigger files do stress your memory more.

You can check with taskmgr.exe weather memory, CPU or I/O is the bottleneck in your setup. Not enough RAM increases the swap file activity, so the harddisk has to work harder while you're also ordering it to process a lot of big files. So it's a combination of disk speed and RAM size.

For audio quality I agree with you that most of the time 16bits is enough. [duck!]

In your position certainly not! Increases file size tremendously, so reduces performance. What are you at now? 96kHz? Well, get back to 44 or 48kHz and you've helped your RAM/disk troubles. You can't get top performance and top quality at the same time. It's a trade-off...

Succes, and happy tracking!

24/44.1 all the way. If you cant hear the difference, then dont bother.

maybe its time to invest in another hard drive :(

24 bits and 44,1 kHz is the way to go.

I dont believe that your soundcard is the problem here.
I think it's your ram/harddisk that can't handle too many 32 bits audio files if you do a lot of freezing.
Everytime you freeze an instrument or mixer channel Cubase makes a 32 bit stereo audio file.
I remember another person having this problem once.

hey guys thanxs for the ansers here

few things ( i know i sound likek a c**t)

i am refering to freezing not bouncing and i only want to freeze cos it looks nice and its easy to change stuff if i want to change a midi notes ect..

when i say my processing power is fine i mean when playin back all my freeze files my power is fine, but my disk isnt

peace, i think im goin to invest in some more ram soon anyway, so ill let u know how that goes.

any clues on how man ram xp works best with when im on cubase ect?

Have you checked that your harddisk is running in DMA mode in the sysyem settings under system/hardware/IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
And if you only have 512 mb ram you really should upgrade to minimum 1024 mb.
Right now where i'm writing this with one browser window open my windows XP is using 473 mb ram !!
