Never had Visual Composer, I wrote my own GUIs for the AdLib. Didn't catch big on but I did sell a few dozen copies.

P.S.: If the cigar is chocolate I can dig it.

AXS, not sure if you can still find a DOS version. But if you visit my music site and listen to EletrifyUrS, its all AXS based.

I used Orchestra-80 (and Orchestra-90) on a TRS-80 Model I and later, a Color Computer 2. I did a lot with the Model I, less with the CoCo, and despite this early start, I never managed to do anything musical with a DOS or Windows machine until really recently.

Ohh ohh ohh, I used to own a CocoMax Color 2. I had a program that could output 4 voices via the printer output (RS232) to any Midi Device. And it worked.

What speed is your computer? If it's at least 250-300 mhz, you can still run Buzz.

is just a little more than that, not much more (350 ,laptop ) , i know i can run buzz , the problem is not buzz, is windows98, i try it but can't stand the time that takes to do simple things, trust me , it can drive a calm man crazy, its really no option running under win98 in that computer (i tried

) , and on the other hand i see that DOS loads very fast , and the same with fastracker and impulse tracker , i just got to take some time to organize a good sample collection . ei..and i just found a version of WORD for DOS that microsoft are given away..

With Cakewalk 4.0 running in MS-DOS 4.01, driving a Kawai K4 through a Roland MPU-401 (the original PC MIDI interface). Cakewalk had an excellent MIDI implementation and even a LISP-like macro language (CAL).

Some primitive audio stuff was achieved through a Media Vision Pro AudioSpectrum 16 card. At the time it was better than the Sound Blaster, but Creative won that particular "VHS vs. Betamax" type of race.

This was in 1991, by the way. After that I stopped for a looong time...

I remember using Scream Tracker 2.X (on Amstrad PC 1640, 8MHz 8086 CPU) and then Fast Tracker 1 (if I remember correctly) and then Fast Tracker 2.

The best one is definitely FT2.

Before Cakewalk I used the Voyetra Gold. It was the first propper sequencer and came with it's own midi port. I used it with a soundblaster (Can't remember but I think it was the SB16 - replaced it years later with the AWE32)), outboard keyboard (Juno)TR303 and a Roland soundcanvas.

I suspect the trouble is not Win98 itself, but:
* lack of sufficient RAM
* slow harddisk
* slow video card (using only 256 colours is faster)
* maybe a system full of crap, built up in the years running that system.

The first three can't be cured, but if you format the drive and reinstall Win98 from scratch it'll be SIGNIFICANTLY faster!

Using DOS programs puts you back in time about 12 years, while using Win98 only about 5 years. CoolEditPro, old version of ACID (ran that on a P75 laptop!) and loads of midi sequencers... all should run fine on Win98.

Or just save up about $100,- and you should be able to buy a second-hand system of just a couple years old. Ask around, check local charity shops, bulletin boards at super markets... Maybe a local PC shop is willing to sell you some aged stock parts for next to nothing. Just step in and ask them.

It was FT2 and IT2 for me back in the old DOS days with a SB16. Impulse tracker even has a low-pass filter, oooooooooooooooooooooo

If you can get used to the GUI of IT, its actually a lot better than FT2

Now the only problem was that ages ago, the disk writer for Impulse Tracker was payware, not sure what happened to it these days. The free writer that comes with it would only write mono tracks, not stereo
