To an extent. It's mostly a combination of sampling from an analog source (vinyl), clipping on input, and using a much lower sample rate than most people are used to these days. All of which is still much easier to do on a real sampler and could be done just as easy with a decent instrument plugin that has sampling integrated into it (probably much less cpu use too).bmanic wrote:I think the old AD/DA stages and the samplers way of interpolating samples and their general audio engine is a rather subtle effect for most people here on KvR. It's not a "magic bullet" of any kind that it seems like some people think it is.

i REALLY liked the sound of my cheesy casio SK-1 toy sampler. i doubt it was over 8 bits at 20KHz. it gave some samples a really nice synthetic fuzzy sound and surprisingly did some real nice bass when transposed down a couple octaves.
if convolution really can simulate effects realistically and not simply turn everuything into blurry resonances like all of the demos i've heard so far, i'd love to have an SK-1 impulse. i'm even considering buying another SK-1 if i can find one as it's hardcore lo-fi.

I dunno, it might well be that I'm looking for some magic bullet that doesn't exist. But then alot of producers seem to think that the sound of a sampler is real important. I've tried sonitex but felt like it didn't get things as "grimey" as I wanted without overly-degrading the signal. It could be that I need more practice using it though. Kingston, it's good to hear your working on something like this, best of luck.
