If you want massive overdrive, I can as well recommend checking out Blood Overdrive.
There's two versions of it: One with a GUI that doesn't recall it's settings in some hosts. And another one that one could (and probably still can?) snag from the FruityLoops demo - which isn't recalling it's settings in other hosts...

Oh btw, you better get yourself some sort of FX chainer or modular sub-host. Energy XT is most excellent, but if you don't want to spend any money the free one from Acon will do in most cases (just that you won't be able to run parallel chains):

Whatever you get, it'll allow you to save your entire FX combination as one single preset - quite an advance.

No mention of Juicy '77 yet? Bloody hell, go here. Not distortion, but as you will need some EQ, I reckon Rough Draft Audio's EQ22 plugin gives a crisp and crunchy sort of tone. It's halfway down on this page

well.......if I hear the words "metal" and "guitar" and "greenday" and "old zep" I can't help but think of two.......

If you have the money.......NI GUITAR RIG 2. Not gonna get more flexible/playable than that......I does so many things in a useful/musical manner, although again pricy and It does suck some cpu.........

Fairly close second.......line 6. I'd get the toneport if I had to do it again.....but frankly they are not bad at all.

The thing about guitarrig is that the word "playable" is key for me. I don't hear as much of the "digital" sound as I do with some others. The stomp emulations are SICK.........and some of the amp sims are good too. Of course NI is not a very "truthful" company, but this is one of those exceptions that you will probably like

Yeah. My guitar recordings didn't sound as good as I wanted them to be until I got a DI box - I got the Behringer Ultra DI, and it works a treat!!

You can get a good metal sound out of JCM900 - you just need to boost the clean signal with Boss SD-1 or Tube Screamer.

ps. And always at least quad track your guitars.

ps2. TLs Pocket Limiter is a good clean booster too.

AFAIK, yes (and it's a bummer). TBH, I never use it for guitars, although it does sound good for a guitar amp sim (and better than anything else I've tried in software). I mainly use it for drum loops or vocals. For my guitar tracks, I use my Marshall amps through a Palmer PGA-04.

I'd second Juicy77, easily (in my opinion) stomps a mudhole in every other ampsim vst I've heard. More "complex" sounding. But NOT easy on the cpu. I'll also second a DI if you don't have one. Even a $20 DI is better than none. You can't imagine what a big difference it'll make.
