Cool, thanks for all the comments. It feels a bit more natural not being tied quite so tightly to a time line. I'm wonderig about doing the basics of a project in a more traditional linear program them maybe chopping it all up into midi/audio clips and exporting all the bits into Live and then jamming in Live with them to create my track that way?

If I invest in Live though I think I also need a midi controler to get the best out of it. Definately a fun program to use though which is important for me

I prefer doing that in Live. Simplicity of staying in one environment feels more productive for me. Others do as you are wondering about.

I was going to suggest that but assumed you already had one.Two of the best afaik are the behringers:

and faderfox: http://www.faderfox.de/

I'd personally have a faderfox for live and a behringer bcr2000 for the studio.One thing about the faderfoxes though is they don't have usb but you can pick up a usb to midi interface pretty cheap from edirol or maudio.

I just find the opening and closing windows kills my flow ...

I have got so used to having 1 monitor with the arrange page and the other monitor given over to the piano-roll (when using XT) that I can't work with a 1 monitor gui.

But, yes the key command might help some.

use one computer for all of my vsti's i record audio clips in ableton. arrange. don't do much scene launching. but i will look into that!

geez why did no one tell me live was SO DAMN GOOD ?

i've been a cubase user for years, and finally decided to check out live, and i am astounded, this thing is perfect for the way i work (or have been trying to work in cubase) , everything about it makes me want to create

for ages i was (unsuccessfully) trying to use my BCR2000 and padkontrol with cubase in an intuitive way; and now without any effort, live is implementing them perfectly

It doesn't suit everybody, it's not a perfect regular DAW replacement, there are things it's weak at, but for what it does, it's kind of unique and bloody great at it - and it makes a *great* alternative or complement to a regular DAW like Cubase or Logic (at least it does for me).

Because it's a totally different workflow. I know Logic like the back of my hand, and love it to death, but you can't really "improvise", jam, easily time stretch and beat match audio and so on. Live however excells at this stuff, and I have to think differently in Live, meaning that the material I write will be different.

So I'll often either use Live to generate all kinds of stuff I then pull into Logic and arrange, or I'll start a project in Logic and when I've got the bones of an idea I'll pull it into Live where I can jam around and improvise with the arrangement. Once I've got that and used some of the unique Live stuff, I'll then eventually pull it back into Logic to finish and mix it.
