Oh, I see. I would think of these as "sample collections" or "libraries". I thought there were new samplers, like Kontakt, HALion, etc. Never mind!Cyrosis wrote:I know of Garritan's, East West's, and one other that I cant recall atm...bduffy wrote:Samplers? What samplers?
There are probably others though.

Nah, I gathered he meant new sample playback engines. EG Garritan, EW, Audio Impressionse etc all developing their own players for their samples!
My main tools: Kontakt, Omnisphere, Samplemodeling + Audio Modeling. Unify = godsend. Tari's libraries also rock.

Garritan and East West are making their own playback engines, moving away from the Kompakt player, although it appears Gary Garritan's sonic morphed libraries will remain on Kontakt 2's technology.bduffy wrote:Oh, I see. doesn't make them any less sample libraries. It's a good thing they are moving to proprietary engines. Heck, it might even mean better overall sound and usability in the end.Cyrosis wrote:Garritan and East West are making their own playback engines, moving away from the Kompakt player, although it appears Gary Garritan's sonic morphed libraries will remain on Kontakt 2's technology.bduffy wrote:Oh, I see. (although I suspect some of it is pure copy protection paranoia)
In fact if I was completely pedantic (and I am a lot of times) I would point out these are romplers.

There seem to be only a few music software products out there that are samplers. AFAIK these include Emu X2, DirectWave, Gigastudio, and 112db's upcoming Morgana.
The rest of those software products are "sound players", not samplers. I agree with Kingston: Those products should be called "romplers" or "sound players" and not "samplers". Samplers - by definition - encode sound and store it digitally. At least that's what it says in the dictionary
Were any other samplers unveiled at NAMM?

I just looked at that "Yellow Tools" thing. That isn't a sampler either. No sample editing, no sampling.. but a "MIDI Groove Player" and an ARPEGGIATOR?
What are those people thinking? They really shouldn't call that product a "sampler". "Virtual Instrument" and "Workstation" are fine, but that thing is not a sampler.

bluepride - leave me alone with your personal definition definitions!!! (had enough discussion with s.o. over at HAL forum)bluepride wrote:I just looked at that "Yellow Tools" thing. That isn't a sampler either. No sample editing, no sampling.. but a "MIDI Groove Player" and an ARPEGGIATOR?

A sampler is an M.I. that loads and plays samples! And if you look at what most users of Akais, emus, kurzweil and Roland samplers did - well, why where there thousands of sample cds (which were definitely all produced with such a device - yes....)? because everyone bought a sampler to make its own samples (especially with that device) - yes, definitely! Of course there is a specific need for that - some people need that, but ...
No sample editing is not right, if you really would think - you can set start, end markers and loop-points and slice - which is editing of the sample.
Other than the EWQL VIs HAL, Kontakt and Independence exactly do that. For most people and professional hq sampling a computer solution with Cubase/DP and so on a recorder/editor is more professional, more convenient and user-friendly. If you have different needs, there are solutions, so grap them and do not disgust people with pseudo-educated personal definitions!
A rompler or sample player how that was indicated before is something (like a Roland JV, JX, VX) that has samples in ROM but can make patches - at least those where always called that way. And sound bank player are things like EMU Proteus. And if you all it a workstation others will come and say, they want a sequencer, because this has to be part of a workstation - so a sequencer for a plugin that is made to run inside fo a sequencer - I think then the internal sequencer should also have the possibilities to host VIs and effects - and multitrack recording!
THere are people that like specialized things (like HAL, Kontakt, DP, etc.) and others that like all-in-one-concepts (like Reason, software sampler that can resample, etc.)
Take a sampler like HAL, Kontakt or Independence if it fits your needs, or take one that overs another feature set like resampling (lots of EMUs and Rolands and Kurzweils did not over sampling or resampling in a base/standard config).
Of course some people always need to be special and have their special, cool, community defintions - as long as you do not spill your personal definition over others, this might be ok! For me the obvious solution on your needs would be Max/MSP or Live/Sampler/Simpler.
