and because manufacturers of components are also driven by the needs of the consumer market they will cease to make hardware that works with much else within maybe 5 years

They're already losing market share to the 'high end/professional' users and many major corporations who are going/staying with Macs, opting for open source servers and workstations running Linux.

The Chinese have just launched the world's first/best/cheapest dedicated Linux CPU...

It's merely a matter of time for MS...

Of course, there will always be the 'mass consumer' buying boxes that say "Use ME if you don't give a crap what's inside!" and who just want to use email and so forth...

Anyway, this is a forum for DAW/VST users in case you had no clue...

The third party developers and Major programmers have worked herd enough to refine XP, just let Vista pass by, it's like any other interruption, if you ignore it, it will die, don't waste your money, remember microsoft can only sell what we the consumer want, remember windows me, and 2000 , where are they and who cared, XP is a revolution and it can become anything you want it to become, oil and improve your XP, and wait for the next train.

Seems like he's talking (wishfully) about how to limit the spread of Vista. I see no mention of DAWs. I suppose that the idea of DAWs might be implied due to the fact that this is a music forum, but that's not the way I read it.

You clearly have no idea what Steve Jobs has done -- he makes Bill Gates look like Santa Claus in comparison. Whatever -- I really do see MS losing ground rapidly, and though the OP is kinda 'cute' in his remarks, I believe MS boxes are really becoming so very 'average consumer' oriented that they're becoming like Playstation 2s for the masses.

But like the Admiral says, XP will be around for a long time -- and XP Lite strips away all the spam garbage anyway.

As far as hardware compatibility is concerned, that will remain very safe for sometime to come. There will be midi/firewire/USB adapters for backwards compatibilty for many years to come -- I can still use my serial mouse and it's 25 years old

Couldn't agree more. Microsoft is not the only company with a fantastic marketing division, his biggest competitor is not any better in selling bad and old ideas in a new look.

A lot of you seem to know very little about vista. Restacked kernel, audio thread has been rebuilt, has a higher priority.

A lot of it is eye candy...a lot... most of it isn't Theres functionality underneath the glass...

If Linux had any sort of audio workstation capabilities at all that weren't at more than a "ooh, neat, they're sort of getting there" level, then maybe. Besides, Ubuntu Edgy Eft crashes like crazy on my hardware. Not so, Windows XP.

Linux, even according to Linus, is coming out with buggier versions. Too many cooks in the kitchen. Not enough of them who care about the end user experience. Software by geeks for geeks to prove their power with geekery. GIMP creators, as an example, seem to refuse working on a more friendly and innovative UI. Their powerful scripting just isn't something most of us are going to bother with. Inkscape looks like a version of CorelDraw from 1998. I use graphics software as example because there's no audio software even comparable to the mature Windows offerings.
