this may sound weird, but if you really want to understand synthesis, then maybe you should build one. that's what got me rollin'.. i picked up synthedit and it all started coming together for me. also pm me if you want a good beginner's synth that can do some pretty fat sounds, i made it to learn on and it is a great beginner's synth.

I like SynthMaker myself. Much clearer, and comes free (but limited) on a recent CM DVD.

Where to start with synths?
